Tuscany is a region of distinct landscapes, from Florence and the vineyards of Chianti to Siena, the Val d’Orcia and the Maremma coast. Renaissance cities, family-run wine estates and hill towns sit within an easy drive of each other, and the region is at its best taken slowly.

At Do Not Disturb, we match you with one of our dedicated Tuscany luxury travel experts who designs a tailor-made itinerary around how you want your time away to feel. With deep destination knowledge and meticulous planning behind the scenes, we transform complex travel into something effortless and entirely your own.

The world without distraction.

Why Tuscany?

Rome has the Colosseum, and the Amalfi Coast has the cliffs at Positano, but Tuscany has no single image that defines it. Its appeal is the land itself, with vineyards farmed by the same families for generations and olive groves that still supply the local table. In hill towns such as Montepulciano and Pienza, daily life carries on with little adjustment for visitors, and a trip here is built around long lunches and the drives between towns rather than a list of sights.

Planning a trip to Tuscany

Tuscany at a glance

Tuscany stretches from the Apennine foothills and the Renaissance cities of the north to the vineyards of Chianti, the medieval heartlands around Siena and the coastline of the Maremma. Florence is the region’s artistic center, while Siena, Lucca, Pisa and smaller hill towns offer a closer view of Tuscany’s civic traditions, architecture and local life.

Its history is layered rather than confined to one period. Etruscan settlements, Roman roads, medieval towers and Renaissance palaces all sit within the same landscape. Florence shaped European art and architecture, while Siena preserved one of Italy’s most complete medieval city centers.

Food is equally tied to place. Tuscan cooking is built around bread, beans, olive oil, game and seasonal produce, with recipes that favor simplicity and strong ingredients. Wine remains central, from Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino to the coastal estates of Bolgheri.

An unhurried pace suits the region best, ideally with a private driver. A morning market in Lucca can lead into lunch in the hills, while a day around Siena might pair its medieval streets with a private tasting near Montalcino. Leaving time open between stops makes the biggest difference to how a trip here feels.

Things to do in Tuscany

A Private Tasting at a Family Vineyard

Beyond the best-known labels of Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino, smaller estates open their cellars for private tastings led by the winemaker, with time to ask about the vineyard and the vintage in the glass. [LINK: A Private Cellar in Montalcino Moment]

Florence Before the Crowds

Private early access to the Uffizi, or a walk across the Ponte Vecchio before the day-trippers arrive, shows a much quieter Florence. The galleries are easier to take in, with room to stand in front of a painting for as long as you like. [LINK: The Uffizi at First Light Moment]

The Val d’Orcia, Slowly

South of Siena, the Val d’Orcia is a landscape of cypress-lined roads, wheat fields, and hill towns such as Pienza and Montepulciano. It is best explored with a private driver or on foot, leaving space for unscheduled stops along the way.

Truffle Season

In October and November, truffle hunters lead small groups into the woods with their dogs, and the white truffle fair at San Miniato fills the town on weekends.

The Palio in Siena

On July 2 and August 16, Siena holds a bareback horse race of three laps around the Piazza del Campo between the city’s historic districts, and seats on a private balcony above the square can be arranged well in advance.

Hidden gems in Tuscany

Bagno Vignoni

The main square of this Val d’Orcia village is a stone pool of thermal water that has drawn bathers since Roman times, and the hotels nearby have their own warm pools fed from the same source.

San Gimignano

The medieval towers are best seen early in the morning, before the tour buses arrive from Florence and Siena.

Monte Oliveto Maggiore

A short drive north of Bagno Vignoni, this abbey holds a cloister painted with scenes from the life of Saint Benedict by Luca Signorelli and Il Sodoma and is still home to a community of Benedictine monks.

The Walls of Lucca

Lucca’s Renaissance city walls are wide enough to walk or cycle the full loop of around two and a half miles, with views over the rooftops and the hills beyond.

The Maremma Coast

Tuscany’s southern edge is often overlooked in favor of Chianti, with beaches, pine forests, and the thermal pools at Saturnia. The Argentario peninsula and the harbor at Porto Ercole add a quieter stretch of coast for families who want time by the sea without leaving the region.

When to visit Tuscany

Spring (April to June)

Highs of 64°F to 75°F, with wildflowers on the hillsides and the vineyards coming back into leaf. Villas, guides and the best-known restaurants book up early.

Summer (July to August)

Inland highs of 86°F to 93°F, with Florence often warmer. Hotels with pools and long dinners outdoors make the heat easier to manage, and the coast runs a few degrees cooler.

Fall (September to October)

Highs ease to 68°F to 79°F, with the grape harvest around Chianti and Montalcino and fewer visitors after mid-September.

Winter (November to March)

Highs of 46°F to 57°F. Towns and museums are quieter, and the white truffle season continues into December.

Getting to Tuscany

From the United States

Travelers from the US typically reach Tuscany with one connection through a major European hub, or fly nonstop to Rome or Milan before continuing by high-speed rail or private transfer. Florence Airport (FLR) is the most convenient gateway for Florence, Chianti and the central Tuscan countryside, while Pisa International Airport (PSA) works well for Lucca, the coast and western Tuscany. Neither airport currently offers regular nonstop service from the United States.

From the United Kingdom

Direct flights operate from London to both Florence and Pisa, with additional seasonal services from selected regional airports. Florence is the natural choice for stays in the city, Chianti or the Val d’Orcia, while Pisa is often more practical for Lucca, Forte dei Marmi and the Maremma coast.

Traveling Through Tuscany

From either airport, a private transfer offers the simplest route into the countryside. Tuscany is best explored with a private driver or rental car, as many wine estates, villas and smaller hill towns sit beyond the main rail network. Trains connect Florence, Pisa and Lucca efficiently, but Siena has slower regional links and the deeper countryside is most comfortably reached by road.
