Why St Lucia?

St Lucia is one of the Caribbean’s most dramatic islands, where rainforest-covered mountains give way to white-sand beaches, hidden coves and the iconic Pitons rising from the sea. Whether you’re looking for a romantic trip, a luxury villa or a stay at one of the island’s celebrated resorts, our St Lucia specialists create tailor-made itineraries designed around your interests, ensuring every detail is seamlessly arranged from start to finish.

Why St Lucia

St Lucia Travel Guides

  • St Lucia Overview

Many Caribbean destinations are built around beaches, resorts and calm coastal scenery. St Lucia is built around its landscape. The Pitons dominate the southwest coast, roads wind through mountains and rainforest, and many of the island’s best hotels are perched on hillsides rather than directly on the beach.

As a result, St Lucia appeals to travellers who want more than a resort stay. You can spend the morning sailing beneath the Pitons, hike through rainforest, visit volcanic hot springs, explore local fishing villages and still be back at your hotel for lunch overlooking the sea.

The island also has a strong romance market. Many of its best hotels are designed around privacy, with open-air suites, plunge pools and dramatic views, making it one of the Caribbean’s most popular destinations for honeymoons and couples.

If Barbados is known for its lifestyle and beaches, St Barths for glamour and dining, and Turks & Caicos for its powder-white sand and turquoise water, then St Lucia is the Caribbean’s most dramatic and scenic island destination, where the landscape itself becomes part of the holiday.

  • St Lucia things to do

The Pitons define the island’s identity and reward engagement rather than admiration from a distance. Gros Piton is hikeable with a licensed guide, a two to three hour ascent that earns views across the island and down to the Caribbean on both sides. Petit Piton is a technical climb and not generally attempted by casual visitors.

Sulphur Springs at Soufriere is the only drive-in volcano in the Caribbean, a collapsed caldera you enter by car and explore on foot with a guide among active sulphurous vents and bubbling mud pools. The adjacent Diamond Falls and botanical gardens make a natural half-day combination.

The snorkeling off Anse Chastanet is among the best in the eastern Caribbean, with a marine reserve that begins just offshore and coral gardens that reward both snorkelers and divers.

The chocolate estates, particularly Rabot Estate run by Hotel Chocolat, offer tours and tastings built around the island’s serious cacao production. Whale and dolphin watching off the west coast operates year-round with sperm whales resident in the deeper water.

  • St Lucia hidden gems

The fishing village of Anse La Raye holds a Friday night fish fry that draws locals from across the island and very few tourists. Fresh catch cooked on open grills along the waterfront, cold beer, local music.

Toraille Waterfall near Soufriere is a small but beautiful cascade with a natural pool beneath it, rarely crowded outside weekend afternoons.

The drive along the west coast road between Castries and Soufriere, through Marigot Bay and the banana plantations, is one of the more scenic road journeys in the Caribbean and worth doing slowly.

  • St Lucia Overview weather

St Lucia sits in the eastern Caribbean and has a tropical climate with two broad seasons. The dry season from December through May brings the most reliable weather, with temperatures between 24 and 30 degrees Celsius, lower humidity and the trade winds keeping conditions comfortable.

This is high season and when the island is at its busiest and most expensive. The wet season from June through November brings higher humidity and afternoon rain showers that typically clear quickly, with September and October carrying the highest hurricane risk.

The island’s mountainous interior creates microclimates, with the rainforest receiving significantly more rainfall than the drier southwest coast around Soufriere.

  • St Lucia getting there

From the US, St Lucia’s Hewanorra International Airport in the south of the island receives direct flights from New York, Miami, Atlanta and other major East Coast cities on American, JetBlue and Delta, with flight times of around four hours from New York and three from Miami.

US West Coast travelers connect most efficiently via Miami or Atlanta. The airport sits at the southern end of the island, around ninety minutes from the Soufriere resort area by road, a transfer that Do Not Disturb arranges by private car or, for those wanting a more dramatic arrival, by helicopter over the Pitons in around fifteen minutes.

From the UK, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic both operate direct services from London Gatwick to Hewanorra, with flight times of around eight and a half hours.

Do Not Disturb coordinates all transfers from the airport to your resort, including the helicopter option for guests arriving into the southwest. The helicopter transfer over the Pitons is one of the better arrival experiences in the Caribbean and worth building into the itinerary if the timing works.

The southwest coast of St Lucia has produced more honeymoon photographs than any other stretch of the Caribbean, and the Pitons look exactly as good in person as they do in all of them.
