Why Croatia?

Croatia’s coastline runs for more than a thousand miles along the Adriatic, backed by medieval walled towns and islands such as Hvar, Korčula, and Vis that are reachable only by boat. Inland, the food culture in Istria rivals northern Italy’s, and Plitvice Lakes National Park shows a different side of the country entirely: waterfalls, forest, and a scale that has little to do with the coast.

Croatia Travel Guides

  • Croatia Overview

Croatia sits on the eastern edge of the Adriatic, a narrow country that runs from the Istrian peninsula in the north down to Dubrovnik near the border with Montenegro.

Its history shows in layers: Roman ruins in Split and Pula, Venetian architecture along the coast, Austro-Hungarian buildings inland, and a more recent history that shaped the walled cities travelers walk through today.

Over a thousand islands sit off the coast, though only a small number are inhabited or set up for visitors. That scarcity is part of what makes the ones that are Hvar, Korčula, Vis, Brač, feel distinct from one another rather than interchangeable stops on a coastal itinerary.

  • Croatia things to do

Walking Dubrovnik’s city walls at a quiet hour, before the cruise ships and day-trippers arrive, remains one of the most direct ways to understand why the city was worth defending for centuries.

Split’s Diocletian’s Palace works the opposite way: a Roman emperor’s retirement palace that’s still a living neighborhood, with bars and apartments built directly into its ancient walls.

Island hopping along the Dalmatian coast, ideally by private boat rather than ferry, opens up Hvar’s harbor town, Korčula’s old walled center, and Vis, which stayed closed to foreign visitors as a military base until 1989 and still feels a step behind the others because of it.

Inland, Plitvice Lakes National Park has sixteen terraced lakes connected by waterfalls and wooden walkways, and Istria’s hill towns anchor a wine and truffle region that holds its own against northern Italy’s.

  • Croatia hidden gems

The Brijuni Islands, a national park off the Istrian coast, were the former retreat of Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito and hold Roman and Byzantine ruins alongside a safari park he built for the exotic animals given to him as gifts by visiting heads of state. Few travelers make it out to them.

The Zrmanja River, inland from Zadar, offers kayaking through a limestone canyon that gets a fraction of Plitvice’s visitor numbers despite similarly dramatic scenery.

And Konavle, the wine region just outside Dubrovnik, is close enough for an afternoon trip but sees little of the crowd; the Old Town draws a few miles away.

  • Croatia Overview weather

    Summer (June to September)

The peak season along the coast, with reliably hot, dry weather. Daytime highs typically run from 84 to 90°F, with overnight lows around 68 to 72°F. This is also when the islands and old towns are at their busiest.

Shoulder Season (April to May / late September to October)

A gentler version of the same coastline, with daytime highs around 65 to 75°F and overnight lows in the 50s. The sea stays warm enough for swimming through most of this window, and both prices and crowds drop noticeably.

    Winter (November to March)

Mild on the coast by European standards, with daytime highs around 50 to 55°F and lows in the low to mid 40s. Rain is more frequent than snow at sea level. Inland, including Plitvice Lakes and the Dinaric Alps, temperatures run several degrees colder, and snowfall is common.

  • Croatia getting there

Dubrovnik Airport (Čilipi) and Split Airport (Resnik) both take direct flights from major European cities and are the two most useful arrival points for a coastal itinerary. United Airlines runs the only nonstop service from the US, seasonal flights from Newark to Dubrovnik through the summer, and a new seasonal Newark to Split route starting in 2026.

Travelers flying other US carriers typically connect through a European hub such as London, Frankfurt, or Munich. Zagreb Airport (Franjo Tuđman) is the country’s main international hub, with more long-haul connections, and suits itineraries that begin inland before heading to the coast. Zadar and Pula airports serve the northern coast and Istria.

Driving between coastal cities takes longer than the map suggests; Split to Dubrovnik runs close to four hours, and car ferries connect Split and Dubrovnik to islands including Hvar, Korčula, and Vis. Jadrolinija also runs year-round ferries from Ancona and Bari in Italy to Split, Zadar, and Dubrovnik.
