The Highlights of Croatia

The Highlights of Croatia

Most first trips to Croatia try to choose between the capital and the coast. This one takes both: two nights in Zagreb’s inland squares, followed by six nights split between Hvar’s coves and Dubrovnik’s walled Old Town, moving south at a pace that favors staying put over covering ground.

At a glance...

Most first trips to Croatia try to cover the whole coast in a rush of one-night stops. This one slows down instead: two nights inland in Zagreb, three nights on Hvar, and three nights in Dubrovnik, each stay long enough to settle into rather than pass through.

Zagreb opens the trip at a different pace than the coast that follows, mornings at the Dolac market under its red umbrellas, afternoons through the Upper Town’s cobbled squares, evenings on Tkalčićeva Street as the city’s bars fill up. From there, the route turns to Hvar, where days empty out entirely: pebbled coves reachable only by boat, lunch off a fishing boat in Stari Grad’s old harbor, an evening on Maslina Resort’s own terrace with nothing on the schedule after it.

Dubrovnik closes the trip inside the Old Town walls, where a private evening walk along the ramparts, timed for after the day’s crowds have cleared, gives way to dinner within sight of the harbor. By the final morning, the pace has dropped to little more than coffee and one last look at the water.

Why The Highlights of Croatia

In detail

  • Day 1: Arrive in Zagreb

    Day 1: Arrive in Zagreb

The trip opens in Croatia’s capital, a city built more for walking than for sightseeing.

Streetcars run past Ban Jelačić Square, and the Upper Town sits within easy reach of most hotels, its cobbled squares and red-tiled roofs largely unchanged in a century.

A first evening might be spent over grah and štrukli in one of the small restaurants tucked into the Upper Town’s side streets.

  • Day 2: The Upper Town and Dolac Market

Day 2: The Upper Town and Dolac Market

A full day on foot through the Upper Town, past the cathedral’s twin spires and the red-and-white checkerboard roof of St. Mark’s Church, and into the Dolac market, where farmers sell cheese, honey, and produce under red umbrellas until early afternoon.

Evening moves toward Tkalčićeva Street, a former streambed now lined with bars and open late into the night.

  • Day 3: South to Hvar

    Day 3: South to Hvar

The route turns to the coast.

Arrival on Hvar comes by way of Split, settling in at Maslina Resort on Maslinica Bay, its low stone buildings set among working olive groves rather than above them.

Dinner the first night draws on the resort’s own olive oil and produce grown on-site.

  • Day 4: Coves off Maslinica Bay

Day 4: Coves off Maslinica Bay

A day spent at the pebbled coves within reach of the resort, reachable by boat and best treated as an afternoon with nowhere else to be.

The water here runs clear over stone rather than sand, and lunch can be arranged on board or back at the resort’s beach club.

  • Day 5: Stari Grad and an Evening on the Terrace

Day 5: Stari Grad and an Evening on the Terrace

Hvar’s older, quieter harbor is a short drive over, its waterfront lined with stone houses and fishing boats that still outnumber yachts.

Lunch might mean grilled fish straight off one of those boats.

Do Not Disturb arranges an evening on the resort’s own terrace, with the bay and the hills behind it as the only view.

  • Day 6: On to Dubrovnik

    Day 6: On to Dubrovnik

The final leg of the coast, arriving at Villa Dubrovnik, built into the cliffside with private steps down to the water and a pool that sits level with the sea beyond it.

  • Day 7: The City Walls at Dusk

Day 7: The City Walls at Dusk

A private walk along Dubrovnik’s city walls, arranged for the quiet end of the day, after the tour groups have moved on and the stone underfoot has had all afternoon to cool.

Dinner follows, at the recommendation of your travel expert.

  • Day 8: Depart from the Old Town

Day 8: Depart from the Old Town

A final morning inside the walls before departure, with time for coffee on the villa’s terrace and a last walk down to the harbor

A winter honeymoon in Europe can mean fewer crowds, better hotel availability and a more intimate atmosphere, but not every sunny destination offers the same experience. We compare the warmest options, the best places for actual beach weather, luxury hotels that work well out of season, and the destinations that still feel special once summer […]

Spain and Portugal can both make exceptional honeymoon destinations, but they deliver luxury very differently. Spain offers greater variety and a more developed high-end hotel scene, while Portugal is more compact, often better value and particularly easy to combine with wine country and coast.

A Maldives honeymoon usually comes down to one early decision. Stay on a single island for the full trip, or divide the time between two resorts with different characters.

Most honeymoon planning defaults to summer, or to whichever destination is warmest on the day of the wedding. Autumn deserves its own shortlist. It is grape harvest in Italy, dry season settling in across the African plains, the last stretch of Caribbean heat before winter rates arrive, and a handful of weeks in Japan that […]
