Egypt holds a five-thousand-year head start on almost everywhere else on earth, and it shows the moment the Pyramids of Giza come into view on the edge of Cairo, still standing exactly where they were built, still the only wonder of the ancient world left intact. From there, the whole country runs along the spine of the Nile, the same river that built the civilization in the first place, carrying travelers south past temples, tombs, and desert light that hasn’t changed in millennia.
Nowhere else lets you trace human history this far back in a single trip. The temples of Luxor and Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, and the pyramids themselves span thousands of years of continuous civilization, and a private Nile cruise remains the single best way to move between them, waking up somewhere new each morning without a single transfer in between. Beyond the ancient sites, the Red Sea coast offers some of the finest diving anywhere in the world, coral reefs dropping straight into deep water a short distance from shore, and the Western Desert delivers a version of silence that’s genuinely hard to find elsewhere on the planet.
Egypt also rewards a slower pace better than its reputation for tour buses and coach groups suggests. A private guide changes the entire experience of the pyramids or Karnak, and the right boat on the Nile turns a bucket list itinerary into something closer to a private expedition.
Nothing really prepares you for seeing the pyramids in person. The scale is extraordinary, especially once you get away from the busiest viewpoints and start to appreciate how dramatically they rise out of the desert.
Across the Nile from Luxor, the Valley of the Kings is where Egypt’s pharaohs were buried for almost five centuries. The experience is less about one grand monument and more about descending into a succession of vividly decorated tombs cut deep into the hills. Tutankhamun’s tomb is the famous name, but some of the lesser-known chambers are even more impressive.
Abu Simbel feels almost theatrical: four colossal statues of Ramesses II carved into the rock face, guarding temples that were moved piece by piece in the 1960s to save them from the rising waters of Lake Nasser.
Siwa feels a world away from the Nile Valley. Near the Libyan border, this remote oasis is known for salt lakes, hot springs, palm groves and mud-brick villages set against an enormous desert landscape.
Alexandria has a different rhythm from the rest of Egypt. Facing the Mediterranean, it mixes ancient history with old cafés, seafood restaurants and a slightly faded seafront grandeur.
Dahab is one of the Red Sea coast’s easiest places to linger. Once a small fishing village, it still feels more relaxed than Egypt’s larger resorts, with laid-back beachfront cafés, excellent diving and snorkeling, and some of the region’s best shore-access dive sites.
Egypt is at its best between November and February, when Cairo, Luxor and Aswan are warm enough for sightseeing without the punishing heat of summer. Desert evenings can be surprisingly cool, which makes this a particularly comfortable time for longer days out and Nile cruises.
Spring is warm and dry, although the Khamsin winds can occasionally bring dusty conditions to the Nile Valley in late March and April. Summer can be extremely hot, especially in Upper Egypt around Luxor and Aswan, while the Red Sea coast is usually more manageable thanks to the breeze. Autumn is a good shoulder season, with temperatures beginning to ease and fewer visitors than in peak winter.
For travelers coming from the USA, Cairo is the main gateway to Egypt, with nonstop flights available from select major US cities and plenty of one-stop options via Europe or the Middle East. From Cairo, it’s easy to connect onward to Luxor, Aswan and the Red Sea by domestic flight.
Most tailor-made itineraries begin with a few nights in Cairo before heading south along the Nile. Private airport transfers are worth arranging in advance, especially after a long transatlantic journey, and domestic flights are usually the quickest way to cover Egypt’s longer distances before switching to private cars or a Nile cruise for the more scenic parts of the trip.
