Finland Travel Guides

  • Finland Overview

    Why Finland?

For travelers who have already covered Western Europe’s classic circuit, Finland offers a different kind of reward. This is a country where luxury often means a private sauna beside a lake, a cabin surrounded by forest, or a night spent beneath the Northern Lights rather than another grand hotel lobby.

Nature shapes almost every aspect of Finnish life, from the country’s sauna culture to its deep connection with the outdoors. Helsinki delivers world-class design, architecture, and dining, while Turku opens the door to one of Europe’s largest archipelagos.

Beyond the Arctic Circle, Lapland reveals a landscape of reindeer, ancient Sámi traditions, and wilderness that stretches far beyond the horizon.

  • Finland things to do

    The Arctic

Few destinations make winter feel this extraordinary. Above the Arctic Circle, Finland delivers many of the experiences travelers imagine when they think of the far north: glass-roofed suites beneath the Northern Lights, snow-covered forests stretching for miles, husky sledding, reindeer encounters, and private wilderness lodges where the only sounds come from nature itself. During the darker months, the aurora borealis frequently appears overhead, while summer brings the opposite phenomenon: weeks of near-continuous daylight beneath the Midnight Sun.

    Sauna & Wellness

Finland is the birthplace of the sauna, and nowhere takes the ritual more seriously. Across the country, you can experience traditional smoke saunas, lakeside retreats, Arctic spa experiences, and cold-water plunges that have formed part of Finnish life for centuries.

    Wilderness & Space

For many visitors, Finland’s greatest luxury is space. Vast forests, thousands of lakes, and some of Europe’s lowest population densities create a sense of freedom that is increasingly difficult to find elsewhere. Whether staying in a private lakeside villa, exploring national parks with an expert guide, or simply enjoying the silence of the Arctic landscape, Finland offers a rare opportunity to disconnect.

  • Finland hidden gems

    Finnish Lakeland

While most visitors head straight for Lapland, Finnish Lakeland shows you a completely different side of the country. Thousands of interconnected lakes, private waterfront villas, traditional saunas, and long summer evenings create one of Europe’s most peaceful luxury experiences. Days can be spent kayaking, foraging, cruising by private boat, or simply enjoying the view from a lakeside terrace.

    The Turku Archipelago

Stretching into the Baltic Sea, the Turku Archipelago is one of the largest archipelagos in the world. Small islands are connected by ferries, bridges, and quiet coastal roads, creating an ideal setting for slow travel. Boutique hotels, seafood restaurants, cycling routes, and private island retreats make it one of Finland’s most overlooked luxury experiences.

    The Midnight Sun

Most travelers visit Finland for the Northern Lights, but summer brings an equally remarkable natural phenomenon. Above the Arctic Circle, the sun barely sets, creating weeks of extended daylight. Evening hikes, late-night paddleboarding, and dinners overlooking Arctic landscapes take place under golden light long after midnight, offering a completely different perspective on Lapland.

  • Finland Overview weather

Finland is a destination of extremes. In winter, Lapland becomes a landscape of deep snow, frozen lakes, and long Arctic nights illuminated by the Northern Lights. From September through March, travelers head north in search of the aurora, staying in glass-roofed suites, wilderness lodges, and remote cabins beneath some of Europe’s darkest skies.

Summer brings an entirely different experience. Above the Arctic Circle, the Midnight Sun keeps the landscape bathed in daylight well into the night, while southern Finland’s lakes and forests become a playground for boating, hiking, swimming, and outdoor dining. The long days create a relaxed rhythm that feels uniquely Finnish, with many locals retreating to lakeside cottages to make the most of the season.

For winter adventures, Northern Lights experiences are typically best between December and March. Travelers drawn to Finland’s lakes, archipelagos, and outdoor lifestyle often prefer the warmer months from June through August, when daylight seems almost endless.

  • Finland getting there

Helsinki Vantaa Airport (HEL) is Finland’s primary international gateway, with direct connections from New York (JFK and EWR), London Heathrow, and most major European hubs. Finnair operates the majority of transatlantic and intra-European routes. Flight time from New York is approximately nine hours. From London, the flight takes under three hours.

Rovaniemi Airport (RVN) and Kittilä Airport (KTT) in Lapland receive direct winter charter flights from several UK and European airports, useful for travelers heading north without an overnight in Helsinki. Domestic connections from Helsinki Vantaa reach both airports in under two hours year-round.

Finland is part of the Schengen Area. US, UK, Canadian, and Australian citizens can travel visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Verify current entry requirements before departure.
