Egypt is one of those places where the great sights are as extraordinary as you hope they will be. The pyramids rise out of the desert with almost surreal force, the tombs around Luxor still hold their color after thousands of years, and the Nile remains the thread that ties the whole journey together.
This is designed as a first introduction to Egypt, but done properly: private guiding where it matters, carefully chosen luxury hotels, seamless transfers, and a slower journey along the Nile rather than trying to rush through the country’s greatest sites. It takes the classic Cairo-to-Luxor route and gives it enough space to feel like a journey rather than a checklist. The outline below follows the broad progression of the source itinerary, including Cairo, Giza and Saqqara, the Grand Egyptian Museum, Aswan, Kom Ombo, Edfu, Luxor, and the return to Cairo.
Arrive in Cairo and meet your private driver for the transfer to your hotel. After the flight, keep the first evening simple. Settle in, have dinner overlooking the Nile or the pyramids, and let Cairo come to you gradually.
For a first stay, we would usually look at one of the city’s best luxury hotels depending on the shape of the trip.
Marriott Mena House is the obvious choice if waking up beside the pyramids is part of the dream, while the Four Seasons works beautifully for a more central, polished Cairo experience.
Start with Egypt’s defining sight: the Giza Plateau. A private guide gives you the freedom to explore the Great Pyramid, the Sphinx, and the wider complex without treating it as a quick photo stop.
Then continue south to Saqqara, where the Step Pyramid of Djoser predates the pyramids of Giza and gives a much clearer sense of how Egyptian monumental architecture developed. Seeing both sites on the same day turns Giza from an isolated wonder into part of a much bigger story.
Return to your hotel in the afternoon and leave the evening open for a good dinner and a little recovery time. Egypt is not improved by exhausting yourself on day two.
Spend the morning at the Grand Egyptian Museum with a specialist guide. The collection is vast, so the goal is not to see everything but to understand the pieces that matter most, from royal sculpture and funerary objects to the treasures associated with Tutankhamun.
The afternoon can be shaped around your interests. That might mean Islamic Cairo and Al-Muizz Street, a quieter visit to Manial Palace, galleries and lunch in Zamalek, or simply time back at the hotel.
Take a morning flight from Cairo to Aswan and transfer directly to your chosen Nile vessel. For a more intimate experience, we would favor a high-end dahabiya or one of the smaller luxury ships over a large conventional cruise.
Once settled on board, head out to Philae Temple, reached by boat and set dramatically on an island. Depending on how you want to structure the day, you can also visit the Aswan High Dam before returning to the river for a quiet evening on board.
Aswan is where Egypt begins to feel different. The river widens, granite islands break the water, and the pace drops noticeably from Cairo.
Begin sailing north through Upper Egypt. This is the point where the journey becomes as much about the landscape as the monuments: date palms, cultivated riverbanks, desert beyond, and villages appearing almost directly at the water’s edge.
Stop at Kom Ombo, unusually dedicated to two gods, before continuing toward Edfu. The Temple of Horus is one of Egypt’s best-preserved ancient temples, with monumental gateways, courtyards, and inner chambers that make it much easier to imagine how a temple complex once functioned.
A smaller vessel gives you more flexibility here, particularly if you want to linger at sites or make quieter stops that larger ships cannot easily accommodate.
Arrive in Luxor and cross to the West Bank, where some of Egypt’s most remarkable archaeological sites sit against the desert hills.
The Valley of the Kings is the centerpiece. Rather than trying to enter as many tombs as possible, choose a smaller number with your Egyptologist and give them proper time. The vivid colors inside some of the chambers are one of the most surprising things about visiting in person.
Continue to the Temple of Hatshepsut, rising in terraces beneath the cliffs at Deir el-Bahari, and the Colossi of Memnon before returning to the river.
If the day has been timed well, this is the evening to sit on deck with a drink and do very little.
Spend your final morning in Luxor on the East Bank. Karnak is not simply one temple but an enormous religious complex built and altered over centuries, with the Great Hypostyle Hall as its most spectacular section.
Continue to Luxor Temple, which feels more intimate and sits right in the heart of the modern city. Seeing the two together gives you a much better sense of ancient Thebes than visiting either one alone.
Later, fly back to Cairo for your final night.
After breakfast, meet your private driver for the transfer to Cairo International Airport and your flight home.
