This seven-day itinerary offers a relaxed exploration of Crete, Greece’s largest island known for its rich history, dramatic scenery and welcoming population. You’ll spend time in Chania and Agios Nikolaos, discovering archaeological landmarks, local traditions and the island’s coastal beauty.
The journey combines guided experiences with time at leisure, from walking tours and hands-on cooking to visits of ancient sites and boat trips to nearby islands.
With comfortable hotels, private transfers and flexible pacing, it’s an easy and rewarding way to experience the best of one of Greece’s more underrated islands.
Day 1
Arrive on Crete’s western coast, where your private driver will meet you for the transfer to your boutique hotel in Chania. Once settled, take the afternoon to unwind by the pool or wander along the waterfront promenade. The Venetian harbour glows in the evening light, and local tavernas offer a relaxed first taste of Crete’s cuisine.
Day 2
Meet your private guide for a morning walking tour through Chania’s historic old town. Wander past stunning Venetian architecture, Ottoman mosques and colourful markets that tell the story of the island’s past. Visit the lighthouse, explore the Maritime Museum, or stop for a coffee in the shaded backstreets.
In the afternoon, enjoy time at leisure – perhaps browsing local boutiques or relaxing at a café overlooking the harbour. Dinner tonight could be at one of Chania’s refined seaside restaurants, where traditional Greek dishes are given a modern twist.
Day 3
Travel to a nearby village for a hands-on cooking experience set in an 18th-century olive mill. Surrounded by olive groves and mountain views, you’ll prepare classic Cretan dishes using seasonal ingredients and local olive oil. After your class, sit down to a shared meal accompanied by regional wine and conversation with your hosts.
Later, return to Chania for a gentle evening stroll or a nightcap beside the harbour.
Day 4
Collect your rental car and begin the scenic drive east towards Agios Nikolaos. En route, stop for a private guided visit to the ancient Minoan palace of Knossos – a fascinating glimpse into Europe’s earliest civilisation. Explore its restored frescoes, storied corridors and royal chambers before continuing through olive-dotted hills to the coast.
Check in to your seaside hotel in Agios Nikolaos and spend the evening unwinding with dinner overlooking the water.
Day 5
This morning, take a short boat ride across the bay to Spinalonga Island. Once a Venetian fortress and later a place of exile, it now stands as a moving reminder of resilience and history. Explore its stone walls and quiet pathways with your guide before returning to the mainland for a relaxed afternoon by the pool or in town.
Day 6
Your final full day is yours to enjoy at your own pace. Spend time by the beach, book a spa treatment, or visit nearby Elounda – a charming coastal village known for its clear waters and easy atmosphere. For a more active day, consider a short hike into the surrounding hills for panoramic views of Mirabello Bay.
As evening falls, enjoy a farewell dinner at a local restaurant, savouring fresh seafood and regional wine as the sun sets over the sea.
Day 7
Drive to Heraklion this morning to return your rental car and check in for your onward flight. Reflect on a week of exploration, hospitality and island beauty.
