Why Lake Como?

Lake Como is shaped by the drama of its geography, with steep, wooded mountains falling directly into deep blue water and villas, gardens and small towns occupying the narrow strip between the two. The opposite shore is almost always visible, close enough to study yet separated by the lake itself, and that sense of nearness and distance gives Como much of its atmosphere. Bellagio, Varenna, Lenno and Tremezzo were built to face the water, so they are best approached by boat, when stone stairways, cypress gardens and pale facades appear gradually against the mountains.

Lake Como Travel Guides

Lake Como lies around an hour north of Milan, where the Lombardy plain gives way to the foothills of the Alps. The lake divides into three branches, with Bellagio positioned at their meeting point and a chain of historic towns arranged along both shores.

Como and Cernobbio form the most urban and polished gateway, while Varenna, Torno, Lenno and Menaggio feel smaller, quieter and more closely tied to the water. Centuries of trade, aristocratic patronage and summer residence have shaped the region, leaving Romanesque churches, formal gardens and villas built into the steep landscape.

A well-planned stay usually combines two or three areas, using private boats and ferries to move between gardens, villages and restaurants rather than relying on the slower lakeside roads.
A Private Boat Crossing at Dusk

Lake Como is at its most atmospheric in the final hour of light, when the water softens and the gardens along the shore begin to glow. A private captain can time the route between Bellagio, Varenna or Tremezzo so the crossing becomes part of the evening rather than simply a transfer.

Villa del Balbianello Before the Crowds

Set on a wooded peninsula near Lenno, Villa del Balbianello is known for its terraced gardens, lake views and richly furnished interiors. Early access with a private guide allows time to understand the villa’s history and architecture before the busiest visitor periods begin.

Torno

A short boat ride from Como, Torno is a compact lakeside village with a small harbor, a Romanesque church and a piazza that still feels closely tied to local life. It sees far fewer visitors than Bellagio, making it an easy place to pause for lunch or an unhurried walk by the water.

The Greenway del Lago

This walking route follows part of the western shore through villages, gardens and stretches of old lakeside road. It offers a slower view of Lake Como, with changing perspectives across the water and access to places that are easy to miss when travelling only by car or boat.

Isola Comacina

Lake Como’s only island sits just off the western shore near Ossuccio. Its ruins recall a settlement destroyed in the 12th century, while the island’s wooded paths and single restaurant give it a secluded character. It is reached by boat and works well as a quiet stop between Lenno and the central lake.
Spring (April to June)

Daytime temperatures typically range from 16°C to 23°C. Villa gardens, particularly at Villa Carlotta and Villa Melzi, are at their most colourful, while the lake begins to settle into its summer rhythm. This is often the best balance of reliable weather and manageable crowds.

Summer (July to August)

Temperatures usually reach 27°C to 30°C, with occasional hotter spells. Bellagio and Como are at their busiest, especially around midday when ferries bring day visitors onto the lake. Early mornings, late afternoons and private boat journeys offer a calmer way to experience the season.

Autumn (September to October)

Temperatures ease to around 18°C to 24°C. Visitor numbers fall after early September, the light softens and the wooded hillsides begin to change colour. It is an excellent time for a longer stay, with warm days and a quieter atmosphere.

Winter (November to March)

Daytime temperatures generally range from 5°C to 11°C. The lake is at its quietest, though several hotels, restaurants and seasonal attractions close during this period. Winter suits travellers who value privacy and stillness more than a full programme of open venues.
From the United States

Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) is the principal gateway for travellers arriving from the United States, with nonstop and connecting services from major North American cities. From Malpensa, Lake Como is around an hour by private transfer, depending on the town and traffic. Como, Cernobbio and the western shore are the most convenient first stops, while Bellagio and Varenna require a longer road journey or an onward boat transfer.

From the United Kingdom

Direct flights connect London with both Milan Malpensa and Milan Linate (LIN). Linate is closer to central Milan, while Malpensa is often more convenient for reaching the western side of the lake without crossing the city. A private transfer offers the smoothest arrival, particularly when travelling with luggage or continuing directly to a lakeside hotel.

Travelling Around Lake Como

Once at the lake, boats are often more practical than the narrow and congested shoreline roads. Private launches allow flexible transfers between towns, villas and restaurants, while public ferries connect the principal destinations. Travellers combining Como with Milan can also use rail services to Como town or Varenna before continuing by boat. US and UK passport holders may visit Italy for short stays within the Schengen limit of 90 days in any 180-day period, subject to current entry requirements.
