Request a quoteXanadu occupies a relatively undeveloped finger of land on the Michamvi Peninsula, on Zanzibar’s east coast near the village of Bwejuu. The beach here sees far less foot traffic than the more popular stretches to the south, and the property’s nine villas are arranged within a dense subtropical forest garden that filters the light and buffers the stronger coastal breezes. Three villas sit directly on the beachfront; the remainder are set back within the garden, all within easy reach of the shore. Abeid Amani Karume International Airport is approximately 58 km away by road.
The architecture is unlike anything else on the island. Domed roofs, arched windows, and circular rooms draw on Arab and Swahili building traditions, while the materials are distinctly local: walls textured with beach sand, window frames fashioned from old dhow timber, pathways laid with pink coral, and furniture and fittings made from upcycled materials throughout. Each villa has its own plunge pool, private outdoor seating, and a dedicated butler trained in-house for a minimum of 12 months.
The Kiota Spa sits at the water’s edge, and kayaks, snorkelling gear, and stand-up paddleboards are available from the beach.
All meals are prepared by a team of local and international chefs drawing on Swahili culinary tradition, with locally sourced vegetables, homegrown herbs, fresh sustainably caught seafood, and Zanzibar spices at the centre of each menu.
Tables are set up in different locations throughout the day: on villa terraces, beside the pool, at the beach, or in clearings within the garden for private evening dinners.
The resort offers kayaks, snorkelling gear, and stand-up paddleboards directly from the beach. Guided reef walks at low tide provide a closer look at the marine life and coral systems along this stretch of coast. The resort’s dhow, Free Spirit, takes guests out along the coastline for sunset sailing with drinks and light bites on board.
Beyond the property, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed old quarter, Stone Town, covers the layered Arab, Persian, Indian, and Portuguese history of the island in a compact warren of streets, markets, and monuments.
As for wildlife-centric excursions, Jozani Forest Reserve, home to the endemic Red Colobus monkey, and dolphin-watching from the village of Kizimkazi are among the wider island options your specialist can arrange.
The Kiota Spa sits directly on the beach, with open architecture that allows the sea breeze and ocean views in while keeping each treatment space private. Treatments are delivered in the spa or in-villa, using products from Africology alongside locally sourced ingredients.
The surroundings, where forest meets the Indian Ocean, provide a naturally restorative backdrop to every treatment.
Seven of Xanadu’s nine villas are one-bedroom, each individually designed and named in Swahili.
Umande is the most intimate, a garden-set hideaway ideal for two.
Alfajiri is built across two levels, with a ground-floor lounge and plunge pool and a first-floor bedroom with an ocean-view balcony, making it a natural choice for honeymooners.
Kimwondo is the most architecturally distinctive, with a rooftop pool and dining terrace suited to candlelit dinners under an open sky.
Mawimbi and Mawingu sit closest to the water, with direct beach access and unobstructed ocean views from their private terraces.
Mlima, Korongo, Mbingu, and Nyota offer two-bedroom configurations suited to families or groups of friends who want privacy without compromising on space.
Each has separate en-suite master bedrooms, a generous shared living and dining area, and a private plunge pool.
Mbingu, the original presidential villa, adds rooftop pool access and ocean-view balconies to both floors.
Nyota, the newest addition at 400 square meters, includes both a large private pool and a rooftop pool, along with the full suite of Xanadu’s signature touches.
