At a Glance

Baraza Resort and Spa sits on Bwejuu-Paje beach on the southeast coast of Zanzibar, a 240-meter stretch of white sand that features on Condé Nast’s list of the Top 30 Beaches Worldwide.

The family-owned and operated property takes its name from the cement benches that are a defining feature of Stone Town‘s streetscape, and the architecture throughout draws on the grand Swahili palace tradition: sweeping arches, ornate brass lanterns, hand-carved wooden furniture made by local artisans, and interiors threaded with the golds and deep tones of the Omani-influenced aesthetic that shaped the island’s identity.

All 30 villas are detached and set within manicured gardens of bougainvillea and palm. Each has a private plunge pool, a large terrace with sun loungers, and a freestanding bathtub.

The resort operates on an all-inclusive basis, with four dining venues, two bars, and a resident Taarab band that performs in the evenings, playing the music of the Zanzibari sultan’s court as it would have sounded in 1880.

Food & Drink

Food & Drink

Four venues rotate across the day. Livingstone Terrace, open to the air, handles breakfast each morning and dinner on selected evenings. The Ocean Lounge serves lunch with a daily menu of chef’s specials alongside an afternoon tea service.

The Sultan’s Dining Room is the main evening setting, with dishes drawing on Arabic, Indian, Persian, Swahili, and local Zanzibari influences and the spices for which the island has been famous for centuries.

The Dhahabu Bar and Lounge opens in the evenings for cocktails before and after dinner, and the Chai Lounge provides a more relaxed setting for drinks and light refreshment throughout the day.

Activities & Experiences

Activities & Experiences

The resort’s Water Club on the beachfront organises all water-based activities across both tides. At high tide, sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking, and paddleboarding are available. At low tide, when the reef is exposed, snorkelling excursions, reef walks, and beach sports take over. The Rising Sun Dive Centre, the only PADI 5-Star Gold Palm and National Geographic Dive Centre in East Africa, operates from the resort.

On land, the Baraza Swahili Experience offers a structured programme of cultural engagement: Swahili language classes and island history sessions held under palm trees, palm weaving on the beach, lessons in Bao (a traditional African board game), and cooking classes using local spices and produce. The resident Taarab band performs traditional Zanzibari court music each evening.

Bike hire is available for guests who want to explore the surrounding area, and excursions to spice farms, Stone Town, and local villages can be arranged through our travel experts.

Spa & Wellness

Spa & Wellness

The Frangipani Spa draws on the spices and botanical ingredients of the island throughout its treatment menu, with therapists trained in Thailand, Bali, and India.

The Sultan’s Bath is the signature couples treatment, combining traditional techniques in a dedicated suite. A lap pool with underwater music and both indoor and outdoor relaxation rooms give the spa a self-contained character suited to a full day’s visit rather than a single treatment.

A well-equipped gym, a yoga room, and two tennis courts round out the wellness facilities.
