Costa Rica is the perfect destination for families who love nature, adventure and time spent together in the great outdoors. This journey has been designed to bring the country’s landscapes and wildlife to life through experiences that are fun, meaningful and memorable for all ages. From exploring rainforest waterways and meeting playful monkeys to learning to surf on sunlit beaches, every day offers something new to discover.
Your adventure begins in the jungles of Tortuguero, where early-morning boat rides reveal a world of monkeys, sloths and vibrant birdlife. In Arenal, the family can walk through treetop bridges, soak in hot springs and learn the secrets of chocolate making.
The journey ends by the sea in Nosara, a relaxed coastal haven where you can surf, explore mangroves or simply unwind together under the palm trees.
Day 1
Arrive in San José, where your private driver and guide will greet you and ensure a smooth transfer to your hotel. Settle in at the Gran Hotel Costa Rica, Curio Collection by Hilton, a comfortable base with plenty of space to relax after your journey. Spend the evening exploring the nearby parks or enjoying a family dinner in one of the city’s welcoming restaurants.
Day 2
This morning, journey across lush landscapes as you travel through Braulio Carrillo National Park toward the Caribbean coast. Along the way, stop for breakfast before boarding a boat that winds through the jungle canals of Tortuguero. Arrive at Tortuga Lodge and Gardens, your peaceful retreat surrounded by rainforest. In the afternoon, head out on your first wildlife safari by boat, spotting monkeys leaping through the trees and colorful toucans gliding overhead.
Day 3
Wake up to the sounds of the jungle before setting out on a guided exploration of Tortuguero’s waterways. Your naturalist guide will help the family spot caimans, iguanas and perhaps even a sloth high in the canopy. Between excursions, take time to relax at the lodge – swim in the pool, play board games together or simply enjoy the tranquility of the rainforest from your hammock.
Day 4
Take a scenic flight over forest and farmland to La Fortuna, home of the famous Arenal Volcano. A private transfer will take you to your lodge, where you can unwind with views of the volcano rising above the jungle. The evening is yours to enjoy the natural hot springs or a family walk along the resort’s tropical trails.
Day 5
Experience the rainforest from above on a private walk along the Arenal Hanging Bridges. Your guide will point out birds, frogs and tiny orchids hidden among the trees. In the afternoon, choose your own adventure – fly through the canopy on a zip-line experience or take a gentler aerial tram ride that offers sweeping views of the volcano and lake.
Day 6
Today combines education and fun for the whole family. Begin with a guided tour to spot sloths in their natural habitat, learning about their slow and fascinating lifestyle. Continue to a local cacao farm to see how chocolate is made, from the bean to the finished treat. Everyone can try their hand at making their own chocolate before enjoying a delicious tasting session.
Day 7
After breakfast, travel west to Nosara, where the jungle meets the ocean. Check in at Lagarta Lodge, an eco-luxury retreat surrounded by lush jungle and panoramic ocean views. Spend the afternoon settling in – swim in the infinity pool, explore the nearby beach or take part in a relaxing family yoga session as the sun begins to set.
Day 8
It’s time to hit the waves with a private family surf lesson at Playa Guiones. Expert instructors will guide you through the basics in calm, shallow waters, making it easy and fun for all ages. Celebrate your new skills with a beach picnic and some time to play in the surf before returning to your hotel for a relaxed evening.
Day 9
Today’s adventure takes you into the nearby mangroves on a peaceful electric boat safari. Glide through narrow waterways, spotting herons, crocodiles and turtles along the way. This gentle excursion offers wonderful opportunities for photography and a chance to appreciate Costa Rica’s rich biodiversity. Spend your final evening sharing stories from the trip as the sun sets over the Pacific.
Days 10–11
After breakfast, your private driver will take your family back to San José for your flight home. As you travel, reflect on the unforgettable memories you’ve created – the laughter, the wildlife encounters and the sense of wonder that comes from exploring one of the world’s most extraordinary natural destinations together.
