Why Self-Drive Mexico: Mexico City to Baja California

In detail

  • Days 1-3: Mexico City

    Days 1-3: Mexico City

Arrive in Mexico’s capital and settle into the historic heart of the city. Your first days are spent exploring its cultural layers, from grand civic spaces to creative neighbourhoods.

An early start on day two is rewarded with a sunrise hot air balloon flight over Teotihuacán. From the air, the scale and geometry of the ancient city reveal themselves in full, before continuing on foot among the pyramids and ceremonial avenues.

Another day is dedicated to Coyoacán, one of the city’s most atmospheric districts. Tree-lined streets, leafy plazas and a strong artistic identity set the tone, with a visit to the Blue House offering insight into Frida Kahlo’s life and work.

  • Days 4-6: La Paz

    Days 4-6: La Paz

Fly west to the Baja California Peninsula and continue to La Paz, a relaxed coastal city known for its access to the Sea of Cortez.

A shared boat excursion to Isla Espíritu Santo introduces the region’s marine life. Expect seabirds overhead, dolphins cutting through the water and the chance to snorkel alongside playful sea lions. The surrounding waters are among the most biologically rich in Mexico.

A free day allows time to explore nearby beaches, many just a short drive away, or to simply slow the pace and enjoy La Paz’s easy rhythm.

  • Days 7-9: Loreto

    Days 7-9: Loreto

Drive north along Baja’s rugged coastline to Loreto, backed by the dramatic Sierra de la Giganta mountains and fronted by the protected waters of the Bay of Loreto National Park.

A whale-watching excursion takes you out into the marine reserve, where blue whales are often sighted in season. Time at leisure allows you to explore the historic mission town on foot or visit the Museum of the Missions to learn about the region’s Jesuit history.

  • Day 10: Puerto López Mateos

    Day 10: Puerto López Mateos

Continue to the remote lagoon systems of Magdalena Bay, one of the most important breeding grounds for grey whales.

Here, you’ll take part in a whale-watching experience known for its close encounters. The calm, shallow waters allow small boats to approach gently, sometimes bringing you within touching distance of these curious giants.

  • Days 11-13: Todos Santos

    Days 11-13: Todos Santos

Travel south to Todos Santos, a laid-back town with a strong creative spirit. Set between desert and ocean, it’s known for its galleries, independent shops and wide, empty beaches.

Your days here are unstructured. Browse art spaces, linger in cafés or walk down to the surf beaches to watch waves roll in against an undeveloped coastline. It’s a fitting contrast to the busier days earlier in the journey.

  • Days 14-15: Departure

    Days 14-15: Departure

Drive to San José del Cabo Airport, return your vehicle and begin your overnight journey home, carrying memories of ancient cities, quiet towns and some of the most memorable wildlife encounters Mexico has to offer.
