Luxury Mexico Honeymoon: Riviera Maya & Tulum

10 days

From £4,605 pp

Ten nights on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, moving from the mangrove lagoons of Mayakoba to the jungle-edged clifftops of Tulum. Ancient ruins, private cenotes, and some of the best restaurants in Latin America along the way.

At a glance...

Two hotels, one coastline, ten nights. You begin at Rosewood Mayakoba, widely considered the best resort on the Riviera Maya, set within a private reserve of mangroves and lagoon waterways south of Playa del Carmen. Seven nights here gives you time to settle properly rather than rush.

Mid-trip, a private day excursion takes you inland to Chichen Itza and the colonial city of Valladolid. It is a long day but one of the most memorable on the itinerary. The cenotes at Dos Ojos are a half-day trip in the other direction, freshwater cave pools that most guests at nearby resorts never bother to visit.

The final three nights are at Azulik in Tulum, a collection of clifftop villas built into the jungle above the Caribbean. The change of scene from Mayakoba is deliberate. Dinner at Sfer Ik and a sunrise visit to the Tulum ruins round out the trip before the transfer back to Cancun.

Why Luxury Mexico Honeymoon: Riviera Maya & Tulum

In detail

  • Days 1 & 2: Arrive at Rosewood Mayakoba

Days 1 & 2: Arrive at Rosewood Mayakoba

Your base for the first week is Rosewood Mayakoba, set within a private reserve of mangrove waterways and tropical forest just south of Playa del Carmen.

Rooms are accessed by boat or golf buggy, and the property manages to feel secluded while delivering the kind of service and food that justifies its reputation as the best resort on the coast.

  • Days 3 & 4: The Cenotes

    Days 3 & 4: The Cenotes

An hour’s drive south of the resort, the cenote network around Tulum is unlike anything else on a standard resort itinerary.

Dos Ojos and Gran Cenote offer crystal-clear freshwater pools connected by underwater cave systems, with almost no one around if you go early. Go with a private guide and take the afternoon back at Rosewood at your own pace.

  • Day 5: Chichen Itza

    Day 5: Chichen Itza

A three-hour drive each way, so an early start is non-negotiable. Go with a private guide rather than a group tour, take breakfast in the car, and arrive before the site fills up. The pyramid is at its most impressive in the first hour.

Lunch on the return at a hacienda restaurant in Valladolid, a small colonial city worth an hour of your time, then a relaxed evening back at the resort.

  • Days 6 & 7: Playa del Carmen

    Days 6 & 7: Playa del Carmen

Rosewood’s beach and pool will have earned a second look by now, but Playa del Carmen is twenty minutes away if you want a change of scene. The Quinta Avenida strip is best navigated with low expectations, but the side streets have good restaurants and the ferry to Cozumel runs regularly for anyone who wants a morning of diving or snorkelling on the reef.

  • Days 8, 9 & 10: Tulum

    Days 8, 9 & 10: Tulum

A short transfer south shifts the mood entirely. The jungle is denser, the architecture more considered, and the restaurant scene genuinely rivals anything in Mexico City.

Check in to Azulik, a collection of eco-villas built into the cliffs above the Caribbean, connected by rope bridges and open to the ocean on three sides. No televisions, no air conditioning, no right angles. It is one of the more singular places to stay in the Americas.

Dinner at Sfer Ik, Azulik’s cavernous restaurant carved into the clifftop, is the meal of the trip. Book ahead. Spend your days at the Tulum ruins at sunrise before the crowds arrive, at the beach clubs in the afternoon, and at the cluster of restaurants along the hotel zone road in the evenings.

  • Day 11: Depart

    Day 11: Depart

Transfer to Cancun for your onward flight.
