Why Essential Mexico Journey: Mexico City, Palenque and Chichén Itzá

In detail

  • Days 1-3: Mexico City

    Days 1-3: Mexico City

Arrive in Mexico City and transfer privately to your centrally located hotel. The remainder of the day is left open to rest or take a short walk to begin getting a sense of the city’s scale and energy.

Your first full day is spent exploring the capital with a guide, focusing on key historical areas and the National Museum of Anthropology. The museum provides essential context for the cultures and civilisations encountered later in the journey.

On day three, travel beyond the city to visit the ruins of Teotihuacán, one of the most important archaeological sites in the Americas. Walk the Avenue of the Dead and explore the main ceremonial structures before continuing to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a significant religious site and place of pilgrimage.

  • Days 4-5: San Cristóbal de las Casas

Days 4-5: San Cristóbal de las Casas

Fly south to Tuxtla Gutiérrez and continue by road into the Chiapas highlands to San Cristóbal de las Casas, a small colonial town set among pine-covered hills.

Spend the following day exploring the town’s historic centre and markets, followed by visits to nearby indigenous villages. These communities maintain long-established traditions, and the visit offers insight into daily life, crafts and local belief systems. The pace here is slower, with time to observe and reflect.

  • Days 6-7: Palenque

    Days 6-7: Palenque

Travel by road from San Cristóbal through mountainous and tropical landscapes toward Palenque. The journey itself reveals a noticeable change in climate and vegetation.

The following morning is dedicated to exploring the ruins of Palenque, set deep within the jungle. With a guide, walk through temples, plazas and palaces partially reclaimed by forest, learning how the city once functioned as a political and ceremonial centre. Later in the day, transfer to the airport for your onward flight to Mérida.

  • Days 7-9: Mérida

    Days 7-9: Mérida

Arrive in Mérida, the cultural centre of the Yucatán Peninsula, and settle into a small, characterful hotel close to the historic centre.

One day is devoted to visiting the Mayan sites of Uxmal and Kabáh, both known for their refined architecture and decorative stonework. These sites offer a quieter, more contained experience than larger ruins.

Another day focuses on Mérida itself, beginning with a guided street food walk through local markets and neighbourhoods. The afternoon is left free to explore independently, visit cafés, or spend time in the central plaza.

  • Days 10-11: Chichén Itzá

    Days 10-11: Chichén Itzá

Travel to Chichén Itzá and stay nearby to allow early access to the site. The following morning, visit the ruins before the main crowds arrive, walking through the ceremonial centre with a guide.

Key structures include the Kukulkán Pyramid, the Great Ball Court and the Sacred Cenote. The early visit allows time for explanation and observation before continuing onward.

  • Days 12-15: Isla Holbox

    Days 12-15: Isla Holbox

Continue north to the coast and cross by ferry to Isla Holbox, a small, car-free island known for shallow waters, birdlife and a relaxed pace.

Spend your days here at leisure. Options include swimming, beach walks, or exploring quieter stretches of coastline such as Punta Mosquito, where flamingos are sometimes seen. The emphasis is on rest and simplicity after the more structured earlier days.

  • Days 16-17: Departure

    Days 16-17: Departure

Return to the mainland and transfer to Cancún Airport for your international flight home. Arrive the following day to complete your journey.
