For eight seasons, Dubrovnik and Split did double duty as some of television’s most recognizable fictional settings, and both cities still carry the marks of it if you know where to look. This trip splits its eight nights evenly between them, four in each, built around the specific streets, walls, and courtyards fans travel here to see.
Dubrovnik supplied the show with its most iconic backdrop: the Old Town’s limestone streets, its mile and a quarter of ramparts, and Fort Lovrijenac perched above the sea all appear across multiple seasons, and a private guided walk retraces the exact routes the production used, cross-referenced scene by scene. Split takes over from there, where Diocletian’s Palace, a 1,700-year-old Roman structure, supplied the vaulted basement sets used throughout the series’ run, along with several of its courtyards and colonnades.
Beyond the show, both cities carry history that the production leaned on rather than invented: walls that predate the cameras by six centuries in Dubrovnik, and a palace in Split built for a Roman emperor’s retirement long before it ever housed a fictional queen’s throne room. A half-day trip from Split to Klis Fortress, another recurring filming location, closes the trip with the view the show’s own cameras used.
