Why Crete?

Crete is Greece’s largest island, and its history reaches back well before classical Athens, to the Minoan palace at Knossos and the frescoes now in Heraklion’s Archaeological Museum. Its towns show the later chapters. In Chania, the old Venetian lighthouse marks the harbor entrance, and a 17th-century mosque stands on the waterfront.

Inland, the White Mountains hold snow into spring before dropping south toward gorges and bays reached only by boat. The food alone justifies the trip, from olive oil pressed in village mills to dakos and slow-cooked lamb in mountain tavernas. Resorts along the north coast make a comfortable base, and a week can take in as much or as little of the island as you like.

Why Crete

Add your Do Not Disturb Moment in Crete

Truffle Hunting in the Crete Senesi A private truffle hunt in the Crete Senesi follows a local hunter and trained dog through Tuscany’s pale clay hills in search of seasonal truffles. The walk ends with a relaxed lunch built around what was found, turning one of the region’s oldest rural traditions into a personal, unhurried experience. Delos day trip from Mykonos A private day trip from Mykonos to one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites in the Mediterranean. Sailing the Caldera at Golden Hour A private catamaran cruise across the Santorini caldera, sailing beneath volcanic cliffs at golden hour with a Greek barbecue, open bar, and the island's best sunset view from the water. Private Acropolis Access with Archaeologist and Rooftop Breakfast Walk the Parthenon before the gates open with a private archaeologist, then continue to the Acropolis Museum and a rooftop breakfast facing the hill. Cliff Walk to Skaros Rock A clifftop trail from Imerovigli leads to Skaros Rock, a rugged volcanic headland and the former medieval capital of Santorini, with caldera views that earn every step. Psarou Beach Psarou Beach explains how Mykonos works in daylight. Guests arrive late morning, settle into pre-booked sunbeds, swim briefly, eat well, and stay put until mid-afternoon in one of the island’s few reliably calm bays. A Private Pottery Workshop on Sifnos Discover a private family pottery workshop on Sifnos, learning traditional techniques in historic studios and creating meaningful keepsakes guided by local artisans. Sailing Santorini’s Caldera Experience a private sunset sailing tour in Santorini with uninterrupted caldera views, peaceful swimming spots, and traditional Greek mezze served on board.

Travel guide

Planning a trip to Crete

Crete at a glance

Crete runs about 160 miles from east to west, so where you stay shapes the whole trip. Heraklion, in the center of the north coast, is the base for Knossos and the island’s main archaeological museum. Chania, to the west, has the best-preserved old town on the island and the closest access to the southern gorges and beaches. A week splits easily between the two.

Things to do in Crete

Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum

The Palace of Knossos, just south of Heraklion, was the center of Minoan Crete more than 3,500 years ago. A private archaeologist guide makes sense of its courtyards and reconstructed frescoes, and the originals hang in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, a short drive away.

Chania Old Town

Chania’s Venetian harbor is lined with 16th- and 17th-century buildings and a lighthouse at the end of the breakwater. Behind it, the lanes of the old town lead to leather workshops, small bakeries, and tavernas set in restored Venetian houses.

The Samaria Gorge

The Samaria Gorge runs about 10 miles from the White Mountains to the Libyan Sea, and walking its length takes most of a day. The trail ends at the coastal village of Agia Roumeli, where a boat takes you along the coast back toward the road.

Hidden gems in Crete

Loutro

Loutro is a small village on the south coast with no road access, reached by boat or on foot. Its white houses wrap around a single bay, with a handful of tavernas on the water and no cars.

Spinalonga

Off the northeast coast near Elounda, the fortified islet of Spinalonga was a leper colony until 1957. A private boat in the early morning brings you to its Venetian walls before the day boats arrive.

Archanes

Archanes is a wine village south of Heraklion, surrounded by vineyards growing Cretan grapes such as Vidiano and Liatiko. A private tasting with a local producer pairs well with a morning at Knossos.

When to visit Crete

May, June, September, and October are the best months, with warm sea temperatures and fewer visitors at the main sites. The Samaria Gorge usually opens from May to October, depending on conditions. July and August are hot and busy, and Crete stays mild into November, longer than most Greek islands.

Getting to Crete

From the US

Fly to Athens, then take the 50-minute connecting flight to Heraklion or Chania. Two or three nights in Athens first make a natural start to the trip.

From the UK

Direct flights to Heraklion and Chania run from London and regional airports in summer. Outside the season, connect through Athens.
