Why Champagne?

Champagne has carried its name since the Middle Ages, and for the better part of that history, the wine itself was almost incidental. Reims crowned the kings of France for centuries before it became famous for anything found in a glass, and Épernay’s underground chalk cellars, now holding millions of aging bottles, were cut long before anyone imagined what they’d eventually be used to store. A tour through a house’s private cellar, arranged rather than queued for.

An afternoon in the vines during harvest, watching a process most visitors only ever taste the result of. A glass poured at the source, in a region where the name on the label still only means one specific patch of chalk and limestone, nowhere else.

Planning a trip to Champagne

Champagne at a glance

Champagne is 160 kilometers east of Paris, part of the Grand Est region, its hillsides, historic houses, and centuries-old cellars named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015. The name itself is legally protected, sparkling wine can only be called Champagne if it comes from this exact stretch of chalk and limestone, nowhere else on earth, a distinction that shapes everything about how the region presents itself. Reims serves as its unofficial capital, its Gothic cathedral the site where French kings were crowned for centuries, long before the wine made the city famous for anything else; Épernay centers on the Avenue de Champagne, a boulevard built above a labyrinth of cellars holding millions of bottles; and Troyes, further south, keeps its medieval character largely intact, timber-framed houses and cobbled streets well outside the wine route entirely.

A well-built stay in Champagne treats the region as more than a day trip from Paris, though the 45-minute high-speed train makes that entirely possible too. It rewards time spent with a single house rather than a checklist of them, a cellar visit that runs at its own pace, a harvest morning spent actually in the vines rather than simply hearing about it afterward, the chalk soil beneath every glass doing more work than most visitors ever stop to consider.

Things to do in Champagne

Beneath Reims and Épernay, networks of chalk tunnels cut over centuries now hold millions of aging bottles, some stretching for kilometers underground, occasionally doubling as exhibition space alongside the wine itself. Above ground, the Avenue de Champagne in Épernay traces the same history in reverse, a boulevard of grand mansions built directly over the cellars beneath them, free to walk and worth more than it costs.

Sabrage, the traditional method of opening a bottle with a saber, is a genuine skill worth learning properly rather than watching as a party trick. For a slower pace, e-bikes and marked routes move through the Grand Cru villages of Bouzy, Verzy, and Mailly, vineyard by vineyard rather than by car.

Reims’ 13th-century Gothic cathedral, free to enter, crowned 25 French kings and remains one of France’s most significant buildings. North of Épernay, the hilltop village of Hautvillers holds the grave of Dom Pérignon, the monk credited with much of Champagne’s early development. Near Verzenay, a lighthouse built for the vineyards rather than the sea gives a 360-degree view over Montagne de Reims from its winemaking museum at the top.

Hidden gems in Champagne

In the village of Fleury-la-Rivière, a winemaker excavated a 250-meter tunnel through what was once tropical seabed, filled with 45-million-year-old fossils, giant sea snails among them, now toured alongside the estate’s own tastings. In nearby Aÿ-Champagne, a former grape-pressing station has become a sensory museum, exhibits built around smelling the aromas and touching the soil rather than reading a wall of text.

The Forest of Verzy holds the world’s largest stand of Faux, ancient dwarf beech trees grown twisted and umbrella-like by a genetic mutation, a genuinely strange landscape a short walk from the vineyards. Above the same forest, a treehouse bar suspended seven meters up serves Champagne over the canopy, reached by a series of wooden bridges.

Away from the well-known houses, a handful of grower estates, farmers who grow their own grapes and bottle the wine themselves rather than buying fruit in, offer a smaller, more direct version of the region, family-run, often only a few generations deep, and built around methods the larger houses left behind decades ago.

When to visit Champagne

Spring (March-May) warms quickly, from lows around 36°F to highs near 68°F by May, blooming vines and lower rainfall making it a strong window for touring before the summer crowds arrive.

Summer (June-August) stays warm and sunny, highs of 75-79°F, though June and July bring the year’s heaviest showers despite the season’s reputation.

Autumn (September-November) carries the harvest, September pleasant and golden, the season turning crisper and damper by November.

Winter (December-February) runs cold and largely overcast, highs rarely above 48°F, quieter travel outside of December’s festive stretch.

Rain falls fairly evenly across the year, worth packing for regardless of season, June the wettest month, April typically the driest. Whatever the weather above ground, the region’s chalk cellars hold a constant 50-54°F year-round, a light layer worth carrying even in peak summer heat.

Getting to Champagne

Champagne has no major commercial airport of its own, so most international travelers arrive via Paris, whichever route gets them there fastest. From New York, direct flights run around 7.5 hours; from Los Angeles and San Francisco, closer to 10.5; from London, the Eurostar into Gare du Nord often beats flying altogether, just over two hours city to city.

From Paris, a high-speed TGV reaches Reims from Gare de l’Est in under 50 minutes, close enough that the region genuinely functions as a day trip, though it rewards staying longer. A regional train covers Épernay in a little over an hour, both options making the region one of the more accessible wine destinations in Europe once the international leg is behind you.
