Egypt deserves more than a quick circuit of its greatest hits. This 13-day journey gives Cairo, the Nile and Upper Egypt enough time to unfold properly, combining the country’s most important ancient sites with exceptional hotels, private guiding and a slower approach to the river.
The route is designed as an introduction to Egypt at its most memorable: the pyramids and museums of Cairo first, followed by the landscapes and temples of the Nile, before finishing among the extraordinary archaeological sites of Luxor.
Arrive in Cairo, where a private driver meets you at the airport and takes you directly to your hotel. Depending on what matters most, we can position you beside the Nile at one of the city’s leading luxury hotels or closer to Giza, where Marriott Mena House offers extraordinary views of the pyramids.
Over the following days, explore the Giza Plateau privately with an expert Egyptologist, taking in the Great Pyramid, the Sphinx and the wider complex before continuing to Saqqara and the Step Pyramid of Djoser.
Another day is devoted to the Grand Egyptian Museum, where a specialist guide can make sense of a collection too large to approach indiscriminately.
There should also be time for Cairo beyond ancient Egypt: the medieval streets and mosques of Islamic Cairo, Manial Palace, Coptic Cairo, or a long lunch and gallery-hopping in Zamalek.
Fly south to Aswan, where the pace changes almost immediately. The city sits on one of the Nile’s most beautiful stretches, with granite islands, palms and desert meeting the water.
Visit Philae Temple by private boat, then spend time exploring Aswan itself rather than treating it simply as the place where a cruise begins. Depending on the trip, this could include the Nubian Museum, a private felucca sail at sunset or an afternoon at one of the city’s historic hotels.
This is also the natural point to include Abu Simbel. The colossal temples of Ramesses II are among Egypt’s most extraordinary monuments, and we can arrange the visit in the most comfortable way possible, including private air options where appropriate rather than committing you to a long road journey.

For travelers who value privacy, we particularly like the idea of a high-end dahabiya. These smaller traditional sailing vessels offer a much more intimate experience than the larger cruise ships, with fewer guests, a slower rhythm and greater flexibility along the river.
The days unfold between time on deck and visits to temples along the Nile. Stop at Kom Ombo, dramatically positioned beside the water, and continue to Edfu, where the Temple of Horus survives in remarkable condition.
Some of the most memorable hours, however, happen between the archaeological sites. The river passes villages, fields, palms and stretches of desert that have defined this landscape for millennia. A good Nile journey gives you time to actually watch Egypt go by.
Arrive in Luxor for the archaeological high point of the journey.
On the West Bank, explore the Valley of the Kings with a private Egyptologist. Rather than rushing between every open tomb, select the most rewarding ones and give them proper time. Continue to the Temple of Hatshepsut beneath the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari and the Colossi of Memnon.
The following day turns to ancient Thebes on the East Bank. Karnak is enormous, built and expanded across centuries, while the Great Hypostyle Hall remains one of the most astonishing surviving spaces from ancient Egypt. Nearby Luxor Temple is more intimate and particularly atmospheric later in the day.
Return to Cairo for your onward journey, with private transfers arranged around your flight schedule.
For longer trips, we can easily add another night in Cairo, continue to the Red Sea for a few days of complete downtime or extend the journey into Alexandria and the Mediterranean north.
