France covers a lot of ground, and the regions behave almost like separate countries in terms of character and cuisine. Provence is all dry heat, lavender fields, and hilltop villages that look unchanged from a century ago. The Dordogne is gentler, a river valley of medieval castles and markets piled with truffles and foie gras. Burgundy moves to the rhythm of the harvest, its landscape a patchwork of the world’s most studied vineyards.
And the Cote d’Azur, despite the glamour cliches, still delivers: the light on the water at Cap Ferrat in late afternoon is as beautiful as anything in Europe.
Paris deserves its reputation. For a two or three night opening act, it remains unbeaten: dinner at a restaurant that would have a six-month waiting list in any other city, a suite in one of the great hotels of the Left Bank, mornings that begin with a croissant and no particular plan.
Getting around France is straightforward. The TGV network is excellent; Paris to Avignon runs at just over two and a half hours, making a multi-region itinerary entirely feasible without flying internally. For the countryside, a hire car is the right move. French roads in the regions are quiet, well-maintained, and one of the great pleasures of the country in their own right.
