At a glance

One&Only Le Saint Geran occupies a private peninsula on the east coast of Mauritius, surrounded by 60 acres of tropical gardens and fringed by more than a mile of white sand beach, with the Indian Ocean on one side and a sheltered lagoon on the other.

The resort was the first property in the One&Only collection and takes its name from the ship Le Saint Geran, which sank off this coast in 1744 and inspired the 18th-century French romance novel Paul and Virginie by Bernardin de Saint-Pierre. A recent transformation updated the resort’s colonial-style architecture, with new structures drawing on the island’s original sugar cane factories and plantation houses for their design language.

The 142 rooms and suites were remodeled as part of that transformation, with nature-inspired interiors of tropical green, sand yellow, and ocean blue, marble bathrooms, and private balconies or terraces with ocean or garden views. The resort occupies its own private peninsula, which means the beach, the pools, the gardens, and the six restaurants are shared only with fellow guests.

Greater Kruger is often discussed as a single destination, but it is really two different safari experiences sharing one ecosystem. Kruger National Park and the private reserves along its western boundary sit on unfenced land, so wildlife moves freely between them, yet the rules, the pace, and the feel of a stay differ considerably depending […]

Kruger rewards visitors year-round, but the experience changes considerably depending on when a traveler goes. Wildlife visibility, weather, and crowd levels all shift with the seasons, sometimes in opposite directions from each other, which makes the question of timing more complicated than a single best month.

Kruger National Park is one of Africa’s most accessible wildlife destinations and one of the most rewarding, but first-time safari travelers consistently arrive prepared for the wrong things. The wildlife guides and the packing lists cover the obvious ground; what follows is the part that usually gets left out.

Wine brought most travelers to the Cape Winelands in the first place, but three days here can hold a great deal more: private art collections, working olive groves, cycling through vineyard rows, and a slower pace than a single-day tasting circuit allows.
