At a glance

Shou Sugi Ban House is a five-star Japanese-inspired wellness resort and destination spa in Water Mill, in the Hamptons.

The property opened in 2019 as the first destination spa in the Hamptons, a gated compound on a few quiet acres two hours from New York City. The design follows Japanese wabi-sabi principles: charred wood, natural materials, calm throughout. 13 standalone studios with soaking tubs, gas fireplaces, and garden patios.

The wellness programmeme is the focus, covering massage, facials, hydrotherapy, sound baths, Reiki, yoga, and meditation, by the day or over several nights. Dining is plant-forward, from Michelin-starred Chef Mads Refslund, a Noma co-founder. A saltwater pool and an outdoor dining orchard sit alongside. An adults-only property built for slowing down, suited to a short reset or longer stay. The ocean is three miles away, with the Hamptons’ galleries and vineyards close by.

The food and drink at Shou Sugi Ban House alone justifies the visit. The Executive Chef Mads Refslund was a co-founder of Noma, the Copenhagen restaurant that inaugurated the New Nordic dining movement.

All the food is plant-forward and made from locally sourced ingredients. Dining takes place around a single long table. Breakfast features Scandi favourites such as avocado with eggs and rye bread.

  • Spa and Wellness

An extensive selection of spa treatments covers hydrotherapy, a thermal suite, a solarium deck, and a spa lounge.

The après-sauna ice fountain, watsu and plunge pools, and a thermal suite with an infrared sauna round out the offering. Wellness is the essence of the property, one of the finest dedicated wellness destinations in New York State.

Napa still sets the benchmark for American wine travel, but it is far from the only place doing it well. Across the US, a handful of regions have built serious reputations for specific grapes, distinct climates, and style of hospitality.

Kenya’s most compelling honeymoon itinerary moves between two entirely different worlds: the wildlife-dense plains of the Maasai Mara and the ancient coral-stone quietude of Lamu Island.
