At a glance

Kruger Shalati is a static luxury train parked on the historic Selati Bridge above the Sabie River, inside Kruger National Park and next to Skukuza Rest Camp. The setting alone makes it one of the most distinctive hotels in South Africa.

The train holds 24 Carriage Suites along the bridge with Sabie River views, with 7 land-based Bridge House Suites for guests wanting a quieter setup. The headline feature is the overhanging pool cantilevered off the bridge, with a viewing deck above the river that pulls elephants, hippos, and crocodiles into view through the day.

The hotel takes its name from a 19th-century African warrior queen, one of the first female chiefs of the Tebula clan within the Tsonga tribe. Stays are all-inclusive, with two daily game drives, all meals, and house drinks. Skukuza Airport is around 5 kilometres away with complimentary transfers, and Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport is about two hours by road.

From the sweeping plains of the Serengeti to the energy of the Masai Mara and the intimacy of private conservancies, not all safaris feel the same. Understanding how each reserve manages access and wildlife encounters is the key to choosing an experience that feels expansive, unhurried, and deeply immersive.

The reassuring reality is that some of Southern Africa’s most respected safari destinations are located in malaria-free regions, allowing travellers to enjoy exceptional wildlife experiences without taking preventative medication.
