The world without distraction.

At a glance

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve covers 3,500 hectares of ancient milkwood forest and rare fynbos two hours from Cape Town, overlooking the marine landscapes of Walker Bay. The reserve holds over 800 plant species, some found nowhere else on earth.

Accommodation splits across three options: the adults-only Forest Lodge with freestanding suites high above the coast, Garden Lodge among the milkwood trees with a strong family-and-couples focus, and a series of Luxury Private Villas with private guides, chefs, and butlers.

Every stay directly supports the Grootbos Foundation, a non-profit driving reforestation, sustainable farming, and youth education across the region. Guided botanical walks, marine expeditions for whales and Cape fur seals off Gansbaai, shark cage diving, and horseback rides along deserted beaches anchor the activity programmeme. Dining draws on Grootbos’s own organic gardens.

    Food and Drink

Dining at Grootbos covers both lodges, each with its own restaurant serving farm-to-table menus built on the herb garden, day-boat fish, and local produce.

Forest Lodge plates contemporary courses beneath the milkwood canopy, while Garden Lodge spreads onto a deck above Walker Bay. Both lodges hold wine cellars stocked with rare South African vintages, and private dinners can move to an outdoor forest boma.

  • Spa and Wellness

    Spa and Wellness

Each lodge has its own spa: Forest Lodge for massages, facials, shiatsu, and reflexology, and Garden Lodge with three treatment rooms and a sauna, run by a resident wellness team.

Treatments can also take place in-suite or out among the milkwood trees. Heated infinity pools at both lodges look over the fynbos and Walker Bay, the natural counterpoint to a day of activity.

  • Activities

    Activities

Grootbos is built around its 3,500 hectares of fynbos and milkwood forest, explored on guided botanical walks, horseback rides, mountain-bike trails, and 4×4 flower safaris.

The coast off nearby Gansbaai is known for land-based whale watching, plus shark cage diving and boat trips to Dyer Island for Cape fur seals and African penguins. Back at the reserve, the Grootbos Florilegium documents its rare plants in botanical art.

Greater Kruger is often discussed as a single destination, but it is really two different safari experiences sharing one ecosystem. Kruger National Park and the private reserves along its western boundary sit on unfenced land, so wildlife moves freely between them, yet the rules, the pace, and the feel of a stay differ considerably depending […]

Kruger rewards visitors year-round, but the experience changes considerably depending on when a traveller goes. Wildlife visibility, weather, and crowd levels all shift with the seasons, sometimes in opposite directions from each other, which makes the question of timing more complicated than a single best month.

Kruger National Park is one of Africa’s most accessible wildlife destinations and one of the most rewarding, but first-time safari travellers consistently arrive prepared for the wrong things. The wildlife guides and the packing lists cover the obvious ground; what follows is the part that usually gets left out.

Wine brought most travellers to the Cape Winelands in the first place, but three days here can hold a great deal more: private art collections, working olive groves, cycling through vineyard rows, and a slower pace than a single-day tasting circuit allows.
