At a Glance

The Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge sits in the far western reaches of the Serengeti, on a tributary of the Grumeti River within the exclusive Grumeti Game Reserve.

With only two other camps sharing 60,000 hectares of wilderness, game drives here unfold without the vehicle congestion that can accompany the more trafficked areas of the northern Serengeti.

The wildlife is present in extraordinary numbers year-round, and the river running alongside the lodge keeps hippos, crocodiles, and a remarkable density of birdlife in permanent residence. Grumeti Airstrip is a 10-minute drive from the lodge, with connections to Arusha.

The lodge holds 10 suites, rebuilt in 2022 by safari design specialists Fox Browne, each positioned to face the river with a private plunge pool and shaded sala on the deck. The design draws on local materials throughout, with canvas, wood, and banana fiber reflecting the building traditions of a Tanzanian tribal manyatta.

An open-sided living area, domed bar, spa, gym, and an infinity pool overlooking the river complete the main facilities.

The lodge holds a Condé Nast Traveller Readers’ Choice Award 2025 for Best Resorts in Central and Eastern Africa.

In detail

  • Food & Drink

    Food & Drink

Dining rotates between settings each evening, from the open-sided terraced living area overlooking the river to lamplit dinners in the African boma, where traditional jiko fires and outdoor ovens produce effortless meals that complement the setting perfectly.

The menu is inventive and fresh, drawing on pan-African influences alongside produce sourced from nearby towns where possible.

The bar is one of the more distinctive in the Serengeti, a circular space hung with a chandelier of kitenge fabric and hand-blown glass baubles, where guests gather before dinner for cocktails and fire-warmed cashew nuts.

Bush breakfasts and extended game drives with meals served in the field can be arranged on request.

  • Activities & Experiences

    Activities & Experiences

Game drives head out in the early morning and late afternoon through terrain that guests typically have entirely to themselves.

The Grumeti region supports large lion prides, elephant herds, leopards, giraffes, and the pied colobus monkey, found nowhere else in the Serengeti ecosystem. The Great Migration passes through the western corridor in June and July, with dramatic river crossings and the enormous Nile crocodiles that gather in anticipation, making this one of the most compelling wildlife spectacles on the continent. Strong game viewing continues throughout the remainder of the year regardless of migration timing.

Walking safaris offer a more intimate engagement with the bush at ground level. Hot air balloon flights over the Serengeti, community visits to the area surrounding the reserve, stargazing sessions, and fishing excursions on Lake Victoria are among the further options available, some of which require advance booking.

  • Spa & Wellness

    Spa & Wellness

Spa treatments are delivered in-suite by local therapists using botanically infused oils sourced from the surrounding region. The treatment menu covers massages and body therapies tailored to guests’ preferences.

A well-equipped gym sits between the suites and the main living area for guests who want it, and yoga instruction is available each morning by the pool.

Yoga sessions run poolside at dawn, accompanied by the birds working the river below.

  • Sustainability

    Sustainability

The lodge was rebuilt on steel frames using materials salvaged from the previous camp alongside locally sourced wood, banana fiber, and East African fabrics.

Power is largely solar-generated, water comes from boreholes, and plastic has been eliminated across the property. The frames themselves could be removed with minimal trace left on the land.

&Beyond’s broader conservation model, Care of the Land, Care of the Wildlife, and Care of the People, underpins operations across all its properties and is reflected in the lodge’s relationships with the surrounding communities and the wildlife of the Grumeti reserve.

Room Types

Suites

The lodge’s 9 suites are built on steel frames clad in canvas and local wood, with flat roofs and double-height open-plan interiors that open fully onto a private deck.

Each has a plunge pool, a shaded sala for afternoon use, and a king-size bed at the centre of the room draped in floor-to-ceiling curtains.

The bathroom extends to one side with Italian marble surfaces, a freestanding bathtub with river views, and both indoor and outdoor showers.

Shelves are stocked with snacks and drinks; Swarovski binoculars and a Bluetooth speaker are provided as standard.

The river, and everything living in it, is the view from every deck.

Family Suite

The single family suite matches the design and scale of the standard suites and adds a second full bedroom with twin beds, its own en-suite bathroom, and an extended terrace that effectively doubles the outdoor space available.

Given that this is the only family accommodation at the lodge, a maximum of two children can be in residence at any one time.

&Beyond’s WILDchild programme provides age-appropriate activities throughout the stay, from nature walks and birdwatching to pizza-making and campfire evenings.
