Portugal vs Spain for Your Honeymoon – Which Should You Choose?

Spain and Portugal can both deliver a brilliant honeymoon, but they suit couples looking for quite different things. Spain has the more developed luxury travel infrastructure, particularly in places such as Madrid, Barcelona, Marbella and Ibiza, where the choice of five-star hotels, destination restaurants, beach clubs, private villas and high-end experiences is exceptional. It also gives you enormous cultural variety, with regions that can feel almost like different countries within the same trip.

Portugal is smaller, easier to navigate and can offer a noticeably more accessible version of luxury. The same budget can often take you further here, whether that means a better room, a private wine experience in the Douro, several nights on the coast or simply a longer honeymoon. Its compact size also makes combinations such as Lisbon, the Douro Valley and Comporta relatively easy without spending half the trip in transit.

There is romance built into Portugal too. Lisbon’s tiled façades, steep winding streets and old trams give the city an intimacy that works particularly well for couples, while the wine country and Atlantic coast make it easy to slow the pace afterward.

So the question is less about which country is more romantic, and more about what you want your honeymoon budget to buy you: Spain offers greater choice, scale and variety; Portugal offers intimacy, simplicity and often more luxury for your money.

Portugal lends itself particularly well to private, low-key experiences. In Lisbon, spend an afternoon getting lost in Alfama and Chiado before taking a private sunset sail on the Tagus, then finish with dinner somewhere overlooking the rooftops. In the Douro Valley, you can stay on a wine estate, visit producers privately and take a boat along the river with the vineyards rising on either side. On the coast, Comporta works beautifully for long lunches, quiet beaches and horseback rides through the dunes, while the Algarve adds private boat trips, sea caves and cliff-backed coves.

Spain gives you a much broader range of options. In Seville, book a beautiful hotel around the old town, explore the Alcázar and Santa Cruz with a private guide, then have dinner on a terrace with views toward the Giralda. San Sebastián is ideal if food is central to the honeymoon, with guided pintxos evenings, exceptional restaurants and the curve of La Concha Bay just outside the door. Barcelona can combine architecture, beach and late-night dining, while Madrid is excellent for couples who want galleries, grand hotels and some of the country’s best restaurants.

Then there are the islands. Ibiza is where Spain’s luxury infrastructure becomes particularly apparent, with private villas, beach clubs, destination restaurants and yachts for a day across to Formentera. Mallorca offers a softer version of island luxury, with stone fincas, the Tramuntana mountains, small coves and some beautiful rural hotels.

Portugal makes this combination unusually easy. Lisbon pairs naturally with Comporta if you want something low-key and design-led, or with the Algarve if you want a proper resort finish. You can have three nights of restaurants, tiled streets and rooftop bars in Lisbon, then move to the coast without making the honeymoon feel like a logistical exercise.

Spain gives you more choice, but usually asks you to cover more ground. Barcelona works brilliantly with Mallorca or Ibiza, while Seville can be paired with Marbella and the Costa del Sol. The upside is range. You can move from architecture, galleries and nightlife to a villa, yacht or beach club within the same honeymoon.

For a shorter trip, Portugal is easier to make feel complete. If you have more time and want the city and beach portions to feel dramatically different from one another, Spain gives you more combinations.

Portugal’s luxury hotel scene is smaller, but that is not necessarily a disadvantage. Six Senses Douro Valley works particularly well for a honeymoon because the hotel is built around the landscape, wine and spa, with suites, villas, vineyard experiences and river trips all in one place. Sublime Comporta takes a very different approach, with rooms and villas spread through a large estate of pine trees, cork trees and dunes, including private pool villas and more secluded accommodation.

Spain has considerably more range at the very top end, particularly in Madrid, Mallorca and Ibiza. Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid gives you the grand-city version, opposite the Prado and beside Retiro Park. Then there is Six Senses Ibiza, where the accommodation runs from pool suites to large residences and beachfront caves on Cala Xarraca. Ibiza has the edge if the honeymoon brief is unapologetically high-end, particularly once you add private villas, yachts, beach clubs and destination restaurants.

May, June, September and early October are the honeymoon sweet spot in both countries. The weather is warm without tipping into the peak of summer, and restaurants, beach hotels and island resorts are all running at full season.

Portugal gets billed as a year-round sunshine destination, and that promise holds up better in some seasons than others. Lisbon and the north see real rain through the cooler months, especially November, when average rainfall runs more than fifty times what Lisbon sees in July. A winter honeymoon in Lisbon or the Douro can still work beautifully, but couples should pack for weather, not guaranteed blue skies.

Spain changes character by region. Seville and inland Andalusia run hot through high summer, while Ibiza and Mallorca hit their stride once the island season is underway and the August crowds have thinned. Madrid and Barcelona are at their best in spring and fall.

For a beach-focused honeymoon, late May through June and September are the strongest windows in both countries.

Portugal wins on simplicity. The country is compact enough that Lisbon, the Douro and the coast can sit comfortably inside one honeymoon without every third day becoming a travel day.

A good Portugal trip might combine Lisbon, the Douro Valley and Comporta, or Lisbon, Alentejo and the Algarve. In eight to ten nights you can create contrast without rushing.

Spain is different. There is far more to choose from, but trying to squeeze Madrid, Seville, Barcelona and an island into one short honeymoon usually weakens the trip. Spain works better when you choose two or three regions and give them proper time. Madrid, Seville and Marbella make sense together; so do Barcelona and Mallorca, or Madrid followed by Ibiza.

If you have a week, Portugal is easier. If you have two weeks, Spain’s scale becomes part of the appeal.

Both Spain and Portugal recognize same-sex marriage nationally. Spain introduced marriage equality in 2005, while Portugal did so in 2010.

For travellers, the more noticeable difference is scale. Madrid and Barcelona have large, visible LGBTQ+ communities, while Ibiza adds a long-established gay travel scene alongside its luxury hotels, nightlife and beach culture. That can make Spain particularly appealing if being somewhere with a visible LGBTQ+ social scene is part of the honeymoon.

Portugal tends to feel lower-key. Lisbon and Porto both have LGBTQ+ nightlife and community, but the experience is generally more compact. For couples whose priority is good hotels, restaurants, wine country and time together rather than a large gay scene, that may suit the honeymoon perfectly.

So this is less a question of whether one is suitable for LGBTQ+ couples. Both are. It is more about whether you want LGBTQ+ nightlife and visibility to be a noticeable part of the trip or simply want to travel somewhere where you can get on with the honeymoon.

Absolutely, but the combination works best when you resist the temptation to turn it into a race around the Iberian Peninsula.

Madrid and Lisbon make a clean two-capital honeymoon, particularly if you want restaurants, art and hotels rather than beach time. Seville and the Algarve give you a more romantic city followed by the coast, and work especially well with a private transfer between them. Barcelona, Mallorca or Ibiza and Lisbon can work for a longer trip where you want city, island and a final few days somewhere more relaxed.

One thing that catches people out is transport. Spain and Portugal look extremely easy to combine on a map, but cross-border rail is not as seamless as travelling within Spain itself. For many honeymoon combinations, a short flight or private transfer makes more sense than forcing the journey by train.

For most couples, keep a two-country honeymoon to three main stops, then spend the money saved on unnecessary travel days on the things you will actually remember: the suite, the yacht, the restaurant, the vineyard or another night by the sea.
