Two of the world’s great ancient civilisations come together on this journey through Egypt and Jordan. Begin among the pyramids and temples of the Nile Valley, then cross into Jordan for Roman cities, Petra, the vast desert of Wadi Rum, and a final few days beside the Dead Sea.
The route follows a 14-day journey through Cairo, Aswan, Luxor, Amman, Petra, Wadi Rum, and the Dead Sea, but we would shape every part around private guiding, the best available hotels, seamless transfers, and enough time to appreciate the places rather than simply pass through them.
Arrive in Cairo and settle into one of the city’s leading luxury hotels before beginning with the sight that has drawn travellers to Egypt for centuries: the Pyramids of Giza.
Explore the plateau privately with an expert Egyptologist, taking time over the Great Pyramid, the Sphinx, and the wider landscape rather than treating Giza as a quick photo stop. Follow this with Cairo’s great collections of ancient Egyptian art, ideally with specialist guiding that can bring some structure to an enormous amount of history.
There should also be time to experience Cairo away from the pharaohs. Islamic Cairo, historic palaces, galleries, and a long dinner beside the Nile give a much better sense of the capital as a living city rather than simply the gateway to ancient Egypt.
Fly south to Aswan, where Cairo’s intensity gives way to granite islands, palms, and one of the most beautiful stretches of the Nile.
Visit the island Temple of Philae with a private guide, then explore the enormous engineering legacy of the Aswan High Dam and the ancient quarry containing the Unfinished Obelisk. Later, take to the river on a private felucca and sail between the islands as the afternoon light softens over the Nile.
Aswan deserves a hotel with a sense of place. This is somewhere to choose river views, historic character, and time for a drink on the terrace rather than treating the city purely as a transit stop.
Continue to Luxor, where the sheer concentration of ancient sites makes this one of the most extraordinary stops in Egypt.
Spend time on the East Bank exploring Karnak and Luxor Temple before crossing the Nile to the West Bank. Here, the Valley of the Kings holds the tombs of Egypt’s New Kingdom pharaohs, while the Valley of the Queens, the Temple of Hatshepsut, and the Colossi of Memnon reveal a completely different side of ancient Thebes.
A specialist Egyptologist is particularly valuable in Luxor. Instead of trying to enter every available tomb, we would focus on a smaller selection chosen for their decoration, historical importance, and current access. The source itinerary specifically includes the Valley of the Kings, Tutankhamun’s tomb, Nefertari’s tomb, Hatshepsut’s temple, and the Colossi of Memnon.
Return to Cairo for a short overnight before flying onward to Jordan.
We would keep this deliberately simple, with a comfortable hotel chosen for easy airport access, private transfers, and as little friction as possible between the two countries. The next morning, fly to Amman and begin the Jordanian half of the journey.
Jordan begins in Amman, a capital where Roman ruins, contemporary restaurants, old neighbourhoods, and modern Middle Eastern life sit side by side.
Explore with a private local guide, beginning at the Citadel above the city. Its layers include the Temple of Hercules, Byzantine remains, and the Umayyad Palace, with wide views across Amman’s hills. From there, head down into the city for markets, cafés, local food, and a more informal look at everyday Jordan.
With two nights here, there is also scope to explore beyond the capital, depending on your interests, before continuing south toward Petra.
The road south can become part of the experience rather than simply a transfer. Stop at Madaba for its famous mosaics, visit Mount Nebo, and, if time allows, explore the medieval fortress at Kerak before arriving in Petra.
The following day belongs to the ancient Nabataean city. Walk through the narrow Siq with a private guide before the rock walls suddenly open onto the Treasury, then continue deeper into a site that is far larger than that single famous façade suggests.
Those happy to climb should continue toward the Monastery, reached by hundreds of steps but rewarded with one of Petra’s most impressive monuments and wide views over the surrounding mountains. With two nights here, the experience can be paced properly rather than condensed into one exhausting day.
Leave Petra behind and travel into Wadi Rum, where sandstone cliffs and red desert replace carved cities and ancient temples.
Explore the landscape privately by 4×4 with a local Bedouin guide, heading away from the most visited areas to natural arches, canyons, rock formations, and open desert. The scale becomes clearest later in the day, when the sun drops and the sandstone shifts through shades of gold, rust, and deep red.
Spend the night in a carefully chosen desert camp, with proper comfort but enough simplicity to let Wadi Rum remain the focus. Dinner under the stars and the silence after dark are as important as the daytime exploring. The source journey similarly builds this stop around Bedouin culture and a night in the desert.
Finish at the Dead Sea, giving the final part of the trip over to rest.
After nearly two weeks of pyramids, tombs, Roman ruins, Petra, and desert, a few days beside the water feel particularly well earned. Float in the mineral-rich Dead Sea, book a spa treatment, spend time by the pool, or simply enjoy having nothing significant left on the schedule.
It is a softer ending to a trip that has covered an enormous amount of history, and it gives you time to slow down before the flight home. The source route likewise finishes with two nights at the Dead Sea.
