This is a region of great diversity. There are lavender fields and olive groves, but also Roman amphitheaters, grand papal architecture, contemporary art, serious wine country, and a coastline that can be added easily if you want a few days by the Mediterranean.
A well-planned Provence trip can be simple. Spend a few nights in the countryside, add Aix or Avignon for culture, then let private drivers, local guides, and carefully chosen reservations take care of the details without overloading the schedule.
Gordes, Roussillon, Bonnieux, and Ménerbes are some of the most photogenic villages in France, but the best way to experience them is slowly. Private touring helps avoid the busiest times and leaves room for markets, galleries, and long lunches rather than racing between viewpoints.
Aix combines elegant streets, fountains, markets, and café culture with a strong artistic heritage. Follow in the footsteps of Cézanne, browse the old town, and finish with a relaxed lunch or dinner in one of the city’s better restaurants.
The Rhône Valley is within easy reach of Avignon and offers some of southern France’s most rewarding wine experiences. Private tastings can be arranged at leading estates, with a day built around the style of wine and level of access you are interested in.
Around Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and Les Baux, the landscape is wilder and more dramatic than the Luberon. It is one of the best areas for beautiful country hotels, olive oil estates, and quieter drives through limestone hills.
South of Arles, the Camargue feels completely different from inland Provence, with salt marshes, white horses, black bulls, and flamingos. It works well as a full-day contrast to the vineyards and villages further north.
Lourmarin is smaller and more relaxed than some of Provence’s better-known villages, with an attractive old center, good food, galleries, and a less hurried feel. It is especially appealing for travelers who want charm without the same level of crowds.
Late spring and early fall are among the best times to visit Provence, with warm days, cooler evenings, and fewer crowds than in peak summer.
June and July are the classic months for lavender, although flowering dates vary depending on altitude and weather. July and August are hot and busy, particularly in the most famous villages. September is excellent for wine country, while October brings a quieter atmosphere and cooler days that are still well suited to exploring.
For travelers coming from the USA, the easiest route is usually to fly into Paris and continue south by high-speed train or domestic flight. Marseille Provence Airport is the main international gateway to the region, and Aix-en-Provence and Avignon are both well connected by rail.
Once in Provence, private transfers are the easiest way to move between hotels, vineyards, villages, and restaurants. The region is best experienced by road, and having a driver makes it much easier to build relaxed days around long lunches, wine tastings, and smaller places that are less convenient to reach independently.
