Iceland Winter Honeymoon

Iceland Winter Honeymoon

From $8,800 pp

Iceland in winter is a different country. The crowds are gone, the light is extraordinary, and the darkness that falls by mid-afternoon turns the sky into something neither of you will have seen before.

At a glance...

This journey is built around the qualities that make Iceland in winter so well-suited to a honeymoon: seclusion, drama, and the kind of stillness that is increasingly hard to find. You will stay in properties chosen for their privacy and their views, explore ice formations that only exist in the coldest months, and spend evenings watching the Northern Lights from the warmth of a private hot tub.

With private guides, seamless transfers, and handpicked boutique accommodation throughout, this is Iceland at its most romantic.

Why Iceland Winter Honeymoon

In detail

  • Days 1–3: Reykjavik and the South Coast

Days 1–3: Reykjavik and the South Coast

    Your journey begins in Reykjavik.

An evening arrival is followed by dinner at one of the capital’s best restaurants, where New Nordic cooking meets Icelandic seafood and the tone is set immediately. The Reykjavik honeymoon experience in winter is quieter and more considered than summer, with the city’s warmth and compact energy making it a natural starting point before the landscapes open up.

The following morning, your private guide collects you for the drive east along the south coast.

Seljalandsfoss waterfall freezes partially in deep winter into formations that change daily. In the absence of summer crowds, you can walk behind the curtain of ice in near-total silence. The black sand beaches at Reynisfjara follow, where basalt columns rise from the shoreline and the North Atlantic breaks against the shore with a force that feels entirely indifferent to the season.

Nights are spent at a handpicked boutique hotel on the south coast, positioned for aurora viewing as darkness falls in the early afternoon.

  • Days 4–5: Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and the Ice Caves

Days 4–5: Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and the Ice Caves

The journey continues east to Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier, and the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon honeymoon experience that defines this section of any Iceland winter itinerary.

A private ice cave excursion takes you into the glacier interior, into blue-lit chambers carved by meltwater over centuries. The colour and scale of the space is genuinely difficult to describe in advance. Access is exclusive to winter, when the glacier freezes solid enough to enter safely. Your guide adjusts the pace entirely around you, with no group and no fixed timetable.

Accommodation for these nights is a remote boutique lodge with direct aurora views from the bedroom. The team monitors conditions throughout the evening and wakes you when the Northern Lights are active.

The combination of the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon by day and the aurora by night makes these the two days that most couples remember most clearly long after they return home.

  • Days 6–7: Golden Circle and Reykjavik

Days 6–7: Golden Circle and Reykjavik

The final stretch of this Iceland winter road trip brings you back toward the west through two of the country’s most significant landscapes.

Haukadalur geothermal valley is home to Geysir, the erupting hot spring that gave all geysers their name. The surrounding landscape of steaming vents and rust-coloured earth rewards time spent wandering rather than moving quickly. The Golden Circle in winter, free of summer tour buses, feels like a different place entirely.

Thingvellir National Park is where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet at the surface, and the geology of the earth becomes something you can walk through rather than read about. A private snorkelling experience between the plates, in water of extraordinary clarity, is available for those who want it.

The journey ends with a final night in Reykjavik at your own speed, dinner and the capital to yourselves, before departure the following morning.

Add your Do Not Disturb moment

  • Take a private ATV tour near Reykjavik, riding the Twin Peaks of Hafrafell and Úlfarsfell for panoramic city, bay, and volcanic views just minutes from the capital.

  • Experience private whale watching in Húsavík, Iceland’s premier destination for humpback and blue whales, with intimate charters in the nutrient-rich waters of Skjálfandi Bay.

  • An after-hours immersion at the Retreat Spa transforms Iceland’s most famous geothermal site into a private, science-led wellness experience. With exclusive lagoon access and in-water treatments, this visit explores the mineral composition, geothermal engineering, and modern Icelandic approach to restoration beyond the daytime crowds.
