At a glance

The Pierre is a historic Fifth Avenue grande dame on Central Park, managed by Taj Hotels, in New York’s Upper East Side.

The hotel opened in 1930, a 41-story tower on Fifth Avenue facing Central Park, modelled on Versailles by the architects Schultze and Weaver. It has been a byword for old New York ever since, with neo-Georgian detail, checkered marble, and trompe l’oeil murals throughout. Around 189 rooms and suites, with Turkish marble bathrooms and views over the park or the skyline.

Dining centres on Perrine, the French-American restaurant, and Two E Bar & Lounge, whose afternoon tea has been rated the city’s best, with live jazz at weekends. The Rotunda, with its 1967 murals, hosts tea and supper. The fitness center and Taj wellness treatments cover the wellness side, though no spa in the resort sense. A grown-up classic for a Manhattan stay, pet-friendly, and a longtime wedding address.

In detail

  • Food and Drink

    Food and Drink

Perrine is the signature restaurant, an all-day French-American room with Indian touches that nod to the Taj ownership, on a site once helmed by Auguste Escoffier and now by Executive Chef Vincenzo Garofalo.

Two E Bar & Lounge serves an afternoon tea that Town & Country has rated New York’s best, alongside a Tiffin & Tea service and weekend jazz. The Rotunda, ringed by Edward Melcarth’s murals, handles tea and supper. Room service operates 24 hours.

  • Spa and Wellness

    Spa and Wellness

The Pierre is a classic city hotel rather than a spa resort, so the wellness side is modest: a fitness center, and a menu of Taj treatments drawing on Indian healing traditions, delivered in the spa treatment rooms or in-room.

There is no swimming pool. The real luxury here is the address, the quiet of an Upper East Side tower, and stepping straight out into Central Park for a morning walk among the trees.

    Location

The Pierre stands at 2 East 61st Street, on Fifth Avenue directly across from Central Park, in the heart of the Upper East Side.

Central Park is across the road, the flagship stores of Fifth and Madison Avenues are on the doorstep, and the Museum Mile, with the Met and the Frick, is a short walk north. Midtown, Times Square, and Grand Central are all within easy reach on foot or by subway from the 59th Street stations.

Rooms and Suites

Around 189 rooms and suites, with Turkish marble bathrooms and views over Central Park or the Manhattan skyline. Smaller rooms hold an air of unpretentious luxury, with Superior Rooms at 300 square feet of space.

Many rooms hold Indian ornamentation that nods to the Taj ownership. The Pierre has hosted some of the city’s most expensive private apartments, including former residents Elizabeth Taylor and Aristotle Onassis. Standard suites work for longer Manhattan stays, with the Presidential Suite at the top of the range.

Napa still sets the benchmark for American wine travel, but it is far from the only place doing it well. Across the US, a handful of regions have built serious reputations for specific grapes, distinct climates, and style of hospitality.

Kenya’s most compelling honeymoon itinerary moves between two entirely different worlds: the wildlife-dense plains of the Maasai Mara and the ancient coral-stone quietude of Lamu Island. Together, they form a journey that is both dramatically varied and precisely calibrated for couples seeking depth over spectacle.
