At a glance...

Gora Kadan occupies the grounds of a villa that belonged to Prince Kan’in, a member of the Imperial family, who used it to receive visitors in the hillside village of Gora. The name Gora Kadan dates from 1948, and the property has hosted travellers as a ryokan since the postwar years. It sits inside Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, among forest and hot springs, and is a member of Relais & Châteaux.

The buildings follow the ryokan tradition of low wooden roofs, sliding paper screens, and stone paths, with long glass walls that open the rooms to the gardens and the wooded slopes beyond. Rooms come in tatami and semi-Western styles, and many have their own open-air bath of stone or wood. The MICHELIN Guide has awarded the property Three Keys, its highest distinction for hotels.

Gora Station, the top of the Hakone Tozan Railway, is a short walk away. From there the cable car climbs towards Owakudani and the ropeway down to Lake Ashi, which puts most of Hakone within reach in a morning. Tokyo is around 90 minutes away by train or private car.

Food & Drink

Food & Drink

Dinner is kaiseki, a sequence of small seasonal courses built around what the surrounding region produces that month, so the menu changes through the year. It can be served in a private dining room or in your own room, and an evening meal here often runs for a couple of hours. Breakfast follows the Japanese style, with grilled fish, rice, miso soup and small seasonal dishes. The Kaninomiya restaurant, set in the original villa building, also serves kaiseki to diners from outside the ryokan.

Wellbeing

Wellbeing

Water from Hakone’s hot springs fills the indoor and open-air baths, which sit among rock pools in the gardens. A private open-air bath can be reserved for your own use, and the indoor pool is heated for swimming through the winter months. The spa’s treatment rooms look out onto the garden and forest, with massages, facials, and a warm bedrock bath, where you lie on heated stone slabs before or after a treatment.

Activities

Activities

The Hakone Open-Air Museum, with its sculpture park and Picasso collection, is one stop down the railway line from Gora. The ropeway carries you over the steaming vents of Owakudani to the shore of Lake Ashi, where boats cross towards the red torii of Hakone Shrine. In autumn the slopes of Sengokuhara turn silver with pampas grass, and a private driver can take you around the Fuji Five Lakes for a day.

Annex Rooms

Annex Rooms

The Annex holds four rooms in its own wing, each named for something in nature. Kakou, meaning the scent of flowers, and Zangetsu, the moon still visible at dawn, are kihinshitsu, a category traditionally kept for honoured visitors. Meigetsu, the harvest moon, and Senshin, the heart of the spring, complete the wing.
