Why Tanzania?

The Serengeti is the standard against which every other safari destination is measured, and it consistently refuses to be surpassed. The sheer scale of it, 30,000 square kilometers of open grassland, acacia savannah, and kopje-studded plains stretching without interruption into Kenya’s Masai Mara to the north, creates a wildlife density that no enclosed reserve can replicate. The Great Migration, in which over a million wildebeest and several hundred thousand zebra move in a continuous annual circuit through this ecosystem, is the largest overland movement of animals on Earth and produces the kind of wildlife spectacle that exists nowhere else.

Why Tanzania

Tanzania Travel Guides

  • Tanzania Overview

Tanzania’s safari ecosystem divides into three main circuits, each requiring separate logistics and delivering a different experience.

The Northern Circuit is Tanzania’s safari foundation and the itinerary most first-time visitors follow. It connects Arusha as the main hub to Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and the Serengeti, all accessible by road or light aircraft from Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha’s domestic terminal. The northern circuit can be covered in a week at pace, but two weeks allows each area the time it deserves. The Serengeti alone justifies multiple days, and many experienced safari travelers return specifically to spend a week or more within the ecosystem, moving between camps as the Migration dictates.

The Southern Circuit covers Ruaha National Park and Nyerere National Park, formerly known as the Selous, in Tanzania’s remote south. These parks see a fraction of the northern circuit’s visitor numbers and deliver a wilder, more private experience for travelers who have done the Serengeti and want something harder to reach. Ruaha is Tanzania’s largest national park and holds exceptional predator populations including lion, leopard, cheetah, and wild dog. Nyerere offers boat safaris on the Rufiji River, one of the most productive wildlife-viewing activities in East Africa.

The Western Circuit, centered on Mahale Mountains and Gombe Stream National Parks on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, is the most remote and rarely visited safari destination in Tanzania.

  • Tanzania things to do

    Game Drives in the Serengeti

No two parts of the Serengeti feel the same. From the Great Migration crossings in the north to the predator-rich plains of the south, each season reveals a different side of one of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles.

    Ngorongoro Crater

A natural amphitheater teeming with wildlife, Ngorongoro offers some of Africa’s most reliable game viewing. Black rhino, flamingos, and dense predator populations thrive within this extraordinary volcanic landscape.

    Zanzibar

The perfect complement to a safari, Zanzibar combines historic Stone Town with white-sand beaches and turquoise waters. It is where East African adventure gives way to complete relaxation.

  • Tanzania hidden gems

    Ruaha National Park

Remote, wild, and wonderfully uncrowded, Ruaha rewards travelers seeking a deeper connection to Tanzania. Vast elephant herds, ancient baobabs, and exceptional predator sightings define the experience.

    Greystoke Mahale

Accessible only by plane and boat, Greystoke Mahale offers one of Africa’s most exclusive wildlife encounters. Tracking chimpanzees through the forest above Lake Tanganyika feels worlds away from the traditional safari circuit.

    Tarangire National Park

Often overlooked, Tarangire is famous for its giant elephant herds and dramatic baobab landscapes. The wildlife is extraordinary, but the crowds rarely are.

  • Tanzania Overview weather

Tanzania’s safari seasons follow two rainfall patterns that shape wildlife movement and camp availability across the ecosystem.

The dry season from June through October is Tanzania’s peak safari period and the window for the Great Migration’s most famous events. Vegetation thins, wildlife concentrates around permanent water, and the Mara River crossings peak in the northern Serengeti between July and October. Temperatures are warm and consistent across safari areas (75 to 85°F), nights cool, and skies reliably clear. Peak season camps at the best northern Serengeti properties require booking twelve months or more in advance.

The calving season from December through March is the other premium wildlife window, particularly for the southern Serengeti’s Ndutu area, where newborn wildebeest attract extraordinary predator concentrations. This period is increasingly recognized by experienced safari travelers as producing the most dramatic predator-prey interactions in the ecosystem, and the camps positioned for it fill quickly.

The two rainy seasons, the long rains from April through May and the short rains in November, deliver lower visitor numbers, significantly reduced rates, and a green landscape that produces its own wildlife spectacle.

  • Tanzania getting there

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam (DAR) are Tanzania’s main international gateways. Kilimanjaro is the standard entry point for the northern circuit, with connections from Amsterdam (KLM), Doha (Qatar Airways), Dubai (Emirates and flydubai), and Nairobi (Kenya Airways). From the US, connections via Amsterdam, Doha, or Dubai bring total travel time from the East Coast to approximately sixteen to eighteen hours. From London, direct flights to Kilimanjaro via Doha or Dubai take twelve to thirteen hours total.

Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ) receives direct regional connections from Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, and functions as the entry point for beach extensions. Most Tanzania safari itineraries use domestic light aircraft to move between safari areas, with scheduled services operating between Arusha, the Serengeti’s multiple airstrips, Ngorongoro, Ruaha, Nyerere, and Mahale. These transfers are arranged as part of the overall itinerary.

Tanzania requires a visa for US, UK, Canadian, and Australian citizens, available online through the Tanzania e-Visa portal before departure or on arrival, though online processing is recommended. Yellow fever vaccination is required for travelers arriving from countries with risk of transmission. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended for all safari areas and Zanzibar. Confirm current health and entry requirements before departure.
