At a glance

Why House is a ten-room boutique hotel set in a three-acre walled garden in Mihiripenna, a small village on Sri Lanka’s south coast around 10 kilometres from Galle.

It is owned and operated by Henrietta, who is usually on hand throughout a stay, with the property carrying the feel of a private house rather than a hotel.

The pool sits at the centre of the grounds, afternoon tea and cake are included in the rate each day, and the beach at Dalawella is a 15-minute walk or a short tuk-tuk ride away. The whole property can be booked exclusively for groups, suiting families as much as couples. Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is 15 to 20 minutes by tuk-tuk and worth at least a day.

The kitchen at Why House moves between Western, Lebanese, and Sri Lankan dishes depending on the evening, with the curry and Lebanese feast nights both becoming something of an institution among returning guests.

Breakfast is a spread of fresh fruit, curd, cereals, and eggs cooked to order, often with string hoppers alongside. Afternoon tea and homemade cake are included in the rate each day. A small bar is stocked with local arrack, wine, and cocktails.

  • Spa and Wellness

Ayurvedic treatments and massages can be arranged with a visiting therapist throughout the stay.

The property also has a yoga pavilion with daily sessions and an open-air gym. The pool is the social heart of the grounds and aqua aerobics sessions operate three times a week, included in the rate.

Sri Lanka’s tea country is a place where production and landscape are inseparable. From hand-plucked leaves to historic bungalows, this guide walks you through how the region looks, works and feels.

Kenya’s most compelling honeymoon itinerary moves between two entirely different worlds: the wildlife-dense plains of the Maasai Mara and the ancient coral-stone quietude of Lamu Island. Together, they form a journey that is both dramatically varied and precisely calibrated for couples seeking depth over spectacle.

While the Masai Mara dominates Kenya’s safari conversation, Laikipia Plateau has quietly assembled one of Africa’s most compelling luxury wildlife destinations across its network of private conservancies. Here, exclusivity is structural rather than marketed; it takes the form of land, access, and a conservation model that keeps the crowds out by design.

The Amalfi Coast offers no shortage of places to spend money well, but Positano and Ravello represent two fundamentally different arguments for how a luxury trip here should feel. Choosing between them is less a matter of preference and more a question of what kind of traveler you actually are.
