Anguilla sits at the northern edge of the Leeward Islands, a narrow coral island that has resisted the kind of development that transformed its neighbors. There are no cruise ship terminals, no casino strips, no all-inclusive resorts. What there is instead is a succession of beaches, most of them near-empty, most of them extraordinary, and a small collection of private villas and boutique hotels that rank among the finest in the Caribbean.
The beaches are the headline attraction, but what sets Anguilla apart is how effortlessly it delivers them. Shoal Bay East, Meads Bay, Rendezvous Bay and Barnes Bay rank among the Caribbean’s finest stretches of sand, yet they rarely feel crowded. There is space to breathe, uninterrupted views across turquoise water, and a sense of calm that has become increasingly rare elsewhere in the region.
Anguilla has also cultivated a reputation as one of the Caribbean’s most exclusive destinations. The island attracts a discerning crowd drawn to its understated approach to luxury. There are no mega-resorts dominating the coastline and little interest in mass tourism. Instead, visitors find elegant beachfront hotels, exceptional private villas, and a dining scene that consistently exceeds expectations.
The villa offering is particularly impressive, ranging from expansive beachfront estates with dedicated staff to secluded hideaways designed for complete privacy. Many guests return year after year, valuing the discretion and exclusivity that Anguilla continues to protect.
Arrive before ten and you will have the beach largely to yourself. The water is calm, clear and shallow for a long way out. There are a handful of beach bars at the eastern end for lunch when you are ready, and no particular reason to be anywhere else.
Anguilla’s villa inventory is among the best in the Caribbean, and an evening in a well-chosen beachfront property, with a private chef, a pool and the sun dropping behind St Martin on the horizon, is the island at its best.
Sandy Island is a small coral cay a short boat ride from Road Bay. It has a beach, a beach bar and very little else. An afternoon there, with a chartered catamaran and a cooler, is a straightforward pleasure.
Only accessible by boat or a steep rope-assisted descent, Little Bay remains one of Anguilla’s most secluded beaches. Arrive late in the afternoon and the small crescent of sand often feels completely removed from the rest of the island.
While much of Anguilla’s luxury scene centres around the west end, Island Harbour offers a glimpse of the island’s quieter side. Local fishing boats bob in the bay, restaurants serve freshly caught seafood overlooking the water, and the pace is noticeably slower.
A tiny privately owned island just offshore from Island Harbour, Scilly Cay has been welcoming visitors for decades yet still feels like a secret. A short boat ride brings you to a simple beachfront restaurant serving grilled lobster, crayfish and rum punch. There are no resorts, no crowds and no agenda beyond enjoying an afternoon in one of Anguilla’s most charming corners.
Anguilla sits in the Caribbean’s dry zone and sees less rainfall than many neighboring islands.
The peak season runs from December through April, when temperatures average around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, humidity is low and northeast trade winds keep conditions comfortable.
The summer months from June through August are hotter and more humid but still broadly pleasant.
Hurricane season runs officially from June through November, with the highest risk window in August and September. Most luxury properties close or operate on reduced rates during this period.
From the US, the most straightforward routing is via San Juan in Puerto Rico, which has direct services from New York, Miami, Boston, Atlanta, Philadelphia and other major East Coast cities.
From San Juan, inter-island flights connect to Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport on Anguilla in around an hour. The alternative is to fly into Princess Juliana International Airport in St Martin, which also has direct US services, and take the twenty-minute ferry from Marigot on the French side. From the UK, the most common routing is via Antigua or Barbados, both served by direct flights from London Gatwick and Heathrow, with onward connections to Anguilla.
