Canada’s Eastern Cities by Train

Canada’s Eastern Cities by Train

From $4,350 pp

This eleven-day journey takes you across eastern Canada by train, from the waterfront and neighbourhoods of Toronto to the cobbled streets and fortress walls of Quebec City, with Ottawa and Montreal in between.

At a glance...

Toronto is the starting point and the largest city on the route: three days that take in the waterfront, the CN Tower at sunset, and a full day at Niagara Falls before the journey north begins. Ottawa is quieter and more compact, the kind of capital city that rewards a slower pace: Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal, and a museum that covers a thousand years of Canadian history. Quebec City arrives like something from a different continent. A UNESCO-listed old town of fortress walls and cobbled lanes with a European atmosphere that still surprises people who expect North America. Montreal brings the journey to a close with two days in one of the continent’s best cities for food, cycling, and knowing when to stay put.

Why Canada’s Eastern Cities by Train

In detail

  • Toronto: Days 1 to 3

    Toronto: Days 1 to 3

Start with the waterfront and the ferry ride to Toronto Island; the city looks even better from the water than from land. The CN Tower is included on your second evening. With the sunset over Lake Ontario, it is the perfect time to go, and the height puts the scale of the city into perspective.

Day three takes you out of the city entirely. A full-day guided trip to Niagara Falls includes a boat trip that takes you close enough to understand why people have been making this journey for two centuries. The return drive along the Niagara Parkway stops at Niagara-on-the-Lake, one of the prettiest villages in Ontario, with time for lunch and the local wines. You’re back in Toronto by evening.

  • Ottawa: Days 4 to 5

    Ottawa: Days 4 to 5

The train from Union Station to Ottawa takes four and a half hours through Ontario’s forested interior. Business class includes a light meal and bar service throughout. Ottawa is a city that tends to surprise people. Smaller than expected, easier to navigate than most capitals, and quietly excellent. Parliament Hill is worth the free twenty-minute guided tour, and the Peace Tower lift gives you the best view over the city. The Museum of History on the Quebec side of the river is one of the better museums in the country.

  • Quebec City: Days 6 to 7

Quebec City: Days 6 to 7

Six hours by train from Ottawa, through increasingly dramatic landscapes as the St. Lawrence comes into view. Quebec City is the most European city in North America, and the description undersells it. The old town is UNESCO-listed, the fortress walls are still intact, and the streets of the Upper Town feel genuinely unlike anywhere else on the continent. A two-hour guided walking tour on your first full day covers the Citadelle, the Governor’s Garden, and Dufferin Terrace above the river. The rest of the time is yours: Rue Petit Champlain for shopping, the restaurants for everything else.

  • Montreal: Days 8 to 9

    Montreal: Days 8 to 9

The train from Quebec City to Montreal takes three and a half hours, arriving at Central Station in the heart of the city. Montreal is the best food city in Canada and makes a strong case for being one of the best on the continent. A half-day cycling tour on your first full day covers the mountain park, the Plateau, and a waterfront viewpoint most visitors never find, with a picnic lunch and craft beer included before the afternoon is yours. The Old Port at sunset, dinner in the cobblestone district, and the kind of evening that makes you wish you had another day.

  • Days 10 to 11: Departure

    Days 10 to 11: Departure

Time this morning for a final breakfast and any last-minute exploring before transferring to Montreal Airport for your international return flight. You arrive home on day eleven.
