Il Sereno is a 40-suite contemporary hotel in Torno, on Lake Como’s eastern shore, housed in a purpose-built structure by Patricia Urquiola completed in 2016. Every suite faces the water, with floor-to-ceiling glass and a private furnished terrace as standard across all categories.
Torno is a small lakeside village, quieter than Bellagio or Como town, with ferry connections to both. The hotel’s own fleet of custom Ernesto Riva wooden boats provides a more direct way to move across the lake.
What sets Il Sereno apart from the region’s belle-epoque grand hotels is its design position: Urquiola used earthy materials, stone, walnut, and bronze alongside exclusively produced fabrics to create interiors that read as contemporary without ignoring their context. The spa occupies the estate’s original boathouse. A 60-foot freshwater infinity pool sits above the lake. Dining is led by Chef Raffaele Lenzi, whose restaurant Al Lago has held a Michelin star since 2017.
Il Sereno Al Lago, the hotel’s lakeside restaurant, holds one Michelin star and is open to outside visitors daily from 7am to 10:30pm. Chef Raffaele Lenzi runs three dinner tasting menus, anchored by his Homage to Tradition format, alongside a regional lunch service. The wine list focuses on small Italian producers, Valtellina reds, and Verdese, a grape grown only in the restricted zone bordering Lake Como.
The Lobby Bar handles cocktails and sundowners, its menu developed by Sri Lankan-born bar manager Don Vidura Nilaksha Colambage and including six aromatic mocktails using regional herbs and flowers.
The Il Sereno Spa occupies the estate’s original Darsena boathouse, redesigned by Patricia Urquiola directly over the water. The facility includes a sauna, steam room, and dedicated treatment rooms. The outdoor relaxation area and pool are positioned above the lake itself.
The gym sits one level below the spa, equipped with cardio machines and weights, and operates 24 hours. The spa’s boathouse location gives it a physical character distinct from the main building, with the lake immediately present throughout.
Torno is a small village on Lake Como’s eastern Cernobbio shore, less trafficked than Bellagio or Como town and better suited to guests who want proximity to the lake without the pedestrian density. Ferry connections reach Bellagio, Varenna, and Como directly from the village.
Milan Malpensa is the closest international airport, roughly 75 minutes by car. Milan Linate is slightly shorter at around 60 minutes. Como San Giovanni station, served by trains from Milan Centrale, is approximately 20 minutes by road or boat.
The Alcova runs 60 to 70 sqm and is built around Urquiola’s Night and Day system: a Molteni alcove adjoining the main room that can function as a sleeping space, reading library, or workspace. A king-size bed faces the lake, and the terrace carries lounge furniture over the water. Natural materials and Urquiola-designed fabrics run throughout in a neutral palette.
The Alcova is the right choice for guests who want more flexibility in how they use the room, particularly for longer stays where a fixed layout becomes limiting. The alcove adds a layer of privacy and utility absent in the standard suite categories.
The Lario Suites range from 50 to 63 sqm and center on unobstructed lake views through floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto a furnished terrace above the water. Each has a king-size bed, sitting area with sofa and reading chair, and a dedicated desk. Fabrics and palette are by Patricia Urquiola, produced exclusively for the hotel, with D. Porthault linens throughout.
The Lario is the hotel’s core suite category, offering the full Il Sereno experience at a mid-range scale. The sitting area and terrace configuration makes it a practical choice for guests spending extended time in the room.
The Piccoletta is Il Sereno’s entry-level suite at 40 sqm and the only wheelchair-accessible accommodation in the hotel. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame lake views, and the room follows the same material language as the wider property: stone, walnut, and bronze, with a king-size bed and D. Porthault linens throughout.
Compact by Il Sereno’s standards, the Piccoletta does not compromise on the core proposition: a lakefront position, private terrace, and Urquiola’s design vocabulary intact. It is the clearest entry point into the hotel for guests prioritizing accessibility or a shorter stay.
