Athens is the main gateway to Greece, and a stay of two or three nights leaves time for its museums and neighborhoods as well as the Acropolis.
The Acropolis can be seen from almost every rooftop in Athens, and the city around it has grown in layers. Classical temples stand a few streets from Byzantine churches and 19th-century neoclassical mansions. At the Acropolis Museum, the Parthenon frieze hangs in a glass gallery set on the same alignment as the temple above. With a private guide, you reach the Parthenon at opening, ahead of the cruise groups.
Athenians eat in neighborhoods like Koukaki and Kolonaki, where tavernas serve grilled octopus with wine from the Peloponnese. Thirty minutes south, the Athens Riviera swaps the city’s heat for sea swims and long seafood dinners at Vouliagmeni. Most journeys to the Greek islands pass through Athens, and two or three nights here add a city to a trip otherwise spent by the sea.

Planning a trip to Athens

Athens at a glance
The historic center fits the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora, and the old lanes of Plaka into a walkable square mile. Syntagma Square sits at its eastern edge, facing the Greek Parliament, and the grand hotels that line it are within walking distance of most of the major sites. North of the square, Kolonaki climbs the slopes of Lycabettus Hill, with designer boutiques, galleries, and cafés where much of the city gathers in the evening.
South of the center, the Athens Riviera follows the coast from the marinas of Glyfada and the swimming coves of Vouliagmeni to the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion. Beach clubs, seafood tavernas, and resort hotels sit right on the water, close enough to the city to combine with a day of sightseeing.
The ancient sites are best seen in the morning, before the heat builds, which leaves the afternoon free for the coast or a long lunch in the city. Piraeus, the port for ferries to the Cyclades and Crete, lies just west of the center, making Athens a natural base before moving on to the islands.
Things to do in Athens
The Acropolis Before the Crowds
The Acropolis opens at 8am, and the first hour is the quietest of the day. A private archaeologist guide walks you through the Propylaia to the Parthenon and the Erechtheion while the light is still soft. Afterward, the Acropolis Museum sits at the foot of the hill, with the Parthenon frieze displayed in a top-floor gallery that looks straight back at the temple.
The National Archaeological Museum
Greece’s largest archaeological museum holds the gold Mask of Agamemnon from Mycenae and the bronze Artemision god pulled from the sea in 1928. A specialist guide keeps the visit to the rooms that matter, which turns a sprawling collection into a focused two hours.
Cape Sounion at Sunset
The Temple of Poseidon stands on a headland at the southern tip of Attica, about an hour’s drive down the coast road. Arrive in the late afternoon, walk the site as the light drops, then stay for dinner at a fish taverna by the water below.
Hidden gems in Athens
Anafiotika
Tucked into the northern slope of the Acropolis, Anafiotika was built in the 19th century by builders from the island of Anafi. Its whitewashed houses and narrow stepped lanes feel closer to the Cyclades than to the city around them.
Lake Vouliagmeni
On the Athens Riviera, Lake Vouliagmeni is a mineral lake fed by underground springs, set beneath a limestone cliff. The water stays warm enough to swim for most of the year.
Kerameikos
The ancient cemetery of Athens lies a short walk from Monastiraki and draws a fraction of the visitors who climb the Acropolis. Its grave markers and the remains of the city gates sit in a quiet, overgrown park.
When to visit Athens
Shoulder Months
April to June and September to October bring warm days and comfortable temperatures for walking the sites.
Summer
July and August are hot, so we plan sightseeing for early morning and evening and keep the middle of the day by the sea.
Winter
Winter is mild and quiet, and the museums and archaeological sites stay open year-round.
Getting to Athens
From the US
Athens International Airport has nonstop flights from several US cities, including New York, with more routes added in summer. The drive into the center takes around 40 minutes, and we arrange a private transfer to meet you on arrival.
From the UK
Direct flights run year-round from London and several regional airports, with a flight time of around three and a half hours.
