At a glance

Banyan Tree Samui is an all-villa resort of 88 pool villas in a private cove at Lamai, on the southeast coast of Koh Samui.

The villas climb a jungle-covered hillside above the bay, built in traditional Thai style on stilts, with indoor space opening onto private decks. Every one of the 88 has its own infinity pool, and most add a heated jet pool, across ten categories from the Deluxe Pool Villa to the two-bedroom Presidential.

Dining splits between The Edge, the clifftop international restaurant, and Saffron, the Michelin-listed Thai room where southern Menora dance accompanies dinner, with a beach BBQ and private Destination Dining alongside. The Banyan Tree Spa adds The Rainforest, Koh Samui’s first hydrothermal circuit. Set on its own cove with a private beach and house reef, the property leans secluded and romantic, a fit for couples on a honeymoon or quiet stay. Lamai is a few minutes away, and the airport is about half an hour.

In detail

  • Food and Drink

    Food and Drink

Saffron is the signature, a Michelin Guide-listed Thai restaurant with Gulf sunset views and performances of Menora, a southern Thai dance, over dinner.

The Edge handles international cooking from a clifftop spot above the bay, and a beachside restaurant operates barbecues by the sand. Banyan Tree’s Destination Dining sets up a private table somewhere memorable for two.

  • Spa and Wellness

    Spa and Wellness

The Banyan Tree Spa works from the brand’s Asian healing traditions through massages and signature rituals, and The Rainforest, Koh Samui’s first hydrothermal circuit, adds a sauna, Swiss shower, and vitality pool.

The whole resort is framed as a Wellbeing Sanctuary, so the villas, dining, and practice spaces all feed into it. Every villa has its own infinity pool, with most adding a heated jet pool too.

  • Location

    Location

Banyan Tree holds a secluded cove on the southeast coast of Koh Samui, just outside Lamai, with the villas terraced down a hillside to a private beach and a house reef good for snorkelling.

One of the quieter parts of the island, about five minutes from Lamai’s restaurants and beach and fifteen from busier Chaweng. The Big Buddha and Samui Airport are around half an hour north.

Koh Samui represents one of Thailand’s most successful transformations from an agricultural island to an upmarket resort destination. Its rise into global conversation deepened again in 2024 when The White Lotus filmed its third season on the island, placing Samui’s landscape and hotel culture in front of a global audience.

Northern Thailand operates according to different historical and spiritual logic than the central kingdom. Chiang Mai’s three primary temples reveal this distinction more clearly than any guidebook summary. Lanna, the historical kingdom centered in the north, developed as a separate cultural entity, influenced by Khmer, Burmese, and Mon traditions rather than the centralized Siamese model.
