Fairmont Le Château Frontenac has overlooked Quebec City since 1893, set high above the St. Lawrence River in the heart of Old Quebec. It is one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks, but it works just as well as a place to stay.
The 610 rooms and suites were updated in a recent renovation, bringing in a more contemporary look while keeping the building’s original character. Many rooms have views across the river or over the old town.
Dining is a highlight. Champlain focuses on modern Quebec cuisine, while Bistro Le Sam and the 1608 Wine and Cheese Bar offer more relaxed options. There is also a spa, indoor pool, steam rooms, and a gym. Fairmont Gold floors add a more private, upgraded experience.
Step outside and you are in the middle of Old Quebec, with shops, restaurants, and historic streets all within walking distance. In winter, the terrace becomes a toboggan run, adding something a bit different to the experience.
The dining at the Château Frontenac punches well above what most hotel restaurants manage, and the range means you are unlikely to eat the same way twice during a stay.
Champlain is the flagship, a serious Quebec fine dining restaurant that treats the region’s ingredients with the kind of attention they deserve. The kitchen works closely with local producers and the menu shifts with the seasons. It is the kind of restaurant worth booking a table at regardless of whether you are staying in the hotel.
Bistro Le Sam is the more relaxed counterpart, open through the day with creative dishes and a cocktail programme worth lingering over in the early evening.
Place Dufferin handles breakfast with river views, the right way to start any morning in Quebec City. The 1608 Wine and Cheese Bar, named for the year Samuel de Champlain founded the city, is the spot for a late glass of something considered.
One detail worth knowing: the hotel maintains rooftop beehives with around 70,000 bees, harvesting honey three times a year that goes directly into the restaurant kitchens. It is a small thing but the kind of specific, place-rooted detail that good hotels do and generic ones do not.
Moment Spa occupies the sixth floor with ten treatment rooms, a couples massage suite, and the full water circuit including an indoor heated pool with views over Old Quebec’s rooftops, a whirlpool, steam room and dry sauna.
The treatment menu covers massages, facials, and body treatments, with options using local Quebec ingredients including maple, which is as appropriate here as anything the spa could offer. The fitness centre is fully equipped and yoga classes are available both on-site and online for guests who prefer their own schedule.
The Château sits at the eastern edge of Old Quebec’s Upper Town, within the UNESCO World Heritage district and a short walk from every significant landmark in the city.
Dufferin Terrace wraps around the hotel’s eastern side with views over the St. Lawrence.
The funicular down to the Lower Town and Quartier Petit Champlain is five minutes on foot. The Citadelle and the Plains of Abraham are within easy walking distance in the other direction.
In winter the hotel operates its own toboggan slide on Dufferin Terrace, which manages to be both absurdly fun and entirely in keeping with the setting.
The entry point into the Château experience, and a respectable one. Rooms run from 175 to 225 square feet with contemporary decor that respects the building’s historical character. Views vary between the inner courtyard and Old Quebec’s rooftops depending on your floor and orientation. Compact by modern luxury standards but full of architectural character that a generic hotel room at twice the size cannot replicate.
The hotel-within-a-hotel tier, occupying the upper floors with private check-in on the 14th floor, access to a dedicated lounge with complimentary breakfast and evening canapés, and a noticeably higher staff-to-guest ratio. The architectural details on the Gold floors are more pronounced and the views more commanding. The right choice for anyone who wants the full Château Frontenac experience without committing to a named suite.
The suites here are unlike anything else in Canada, partly because of what they are and partly because of who they remember. Churchill planned the Allied invasion of Europe from this building in 1943. Roosevelt was in the room next door.
Queen Elizabeth II stayed here on official visits. Céline Dion grew up in Quebec and has been connected to this hotel her whole career. Each of the named suites carries one of those stories, and staying in one of them is a different experience to simply booking a large room.
The Churchill Suite has a living and dining room scaled for the kind of meetings it once hosted, plus a marble bathroom and river views. The Roosevelt Suite sits on the top floor with private access and looks out over Old Quebec. Both include butler service, as do all the named suites.
The Van Horne Suite, named for the Canadian Pacific Railway president who commissioned the building in 1892, is the most significant room in the hotel and the one to ask about for a special occasion.
