Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort stands 250km north of the Arctic Circle in the Saariselkä fell region of Finnish Lapland, within easy reach of Urho Kekkonen National Park.

The resort is built around the glass igloo, an accommodation format it pioneered and which remains the most direct way to watch the Northern Lights from a warm bed. The property is split across two villages, East and West, each with its own accommodation, restaurants, saunas, and activities, connected by a shuttle service.

The resort operates year-round, with the glass igloos available from late August through to the end of April during the Northern Lights season. Summer brings the midnight sun, horse trekking, fishing, and canoeing to the same landscape. Kakslauttanen Cosmos, an on-site space complex within the West Village, includes an observatory, planetarium, and interactive displays.

Food and Drink

The resort has four restaurants across its two villages. The East Village Restaurant, set in a traditional Kelo-log chalet, is the main dining venue for guests in the East Village, drawing on Lappish produce with reindeer, fish from local waters, and seasonal specialities alongside international options.

Aurora Restaurant is the West Village’s main dining room, serving Lappish cuisine alongside Asian dishes. Breakfast and dinner are included for most accommodation types. Korsu Restaurant offers a more intimate setting within the Kakslauttanen Cosmos complex, and Savusauna Restaurant is attached to the resort’s smoke sauna for post-sauna meals in a setting unlike anywhere else on the property.
Spa and Wellness

Kakslauttanen has six saunas across the resort, each with a relaxation room and open fireplace, and each connected to an outdoor ice pool or ice hole for cold-water immersion.

The East Village includes three smoke saunas, one of which stands directly on the lake. The West Village smoke sauna has a capacity of 200 guests and is considered one of the world’s largest. Private saunas are included in the Kelo-Glass Igloos, most log cabin categories, and all Glass Igloos.
Location

Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort stands 250km north of the Arctic Circle in the Saariselkä fell region of Finnish Lapland, on the edge of Urho Kekkonen National Park.

The nearest airport is Ivalo, around 30 minutes by road, with regular flights from Helsinki. The resort operates its own shuttle between the villages and to the airport. The surrounding fell landscape gives direct access to Northern Lights hunting from late August to April, and to the midnight sun, fishing, canoeing, and horse trekking through the summer months. The Russian border lies to the east and Saariselkä ski resort is 25km north.

Room Types

Glass Igloos

The Glass Igloos are the resort’s founding accommodation type, with a thermal glass roof engineered to stay frost-free in temperatures well below zero and maintain an interior of around 21°C.

Every Glass Igloo includes a full en-suite bathroom and private sauna. An Aurora alarm alerts guests when the lights are visible, removing the need to stay awake waiting. The igloos are available in both East and West Village.

Kelo-Glass Igloos

The Kelo-Glass Igloos combine the glass viewing bedroom of the standard igloo with the warmth and character of a Kelo pine log cabin.

Each sleeps up to six and includes a private sauna, fireplace, and kitchenette alongside the glass-roofed bedroom, suited to families or small groups wanting both the Aurora viewing experience and a full cabin setup.

Log Cabins

The log cabins are built from Kelo pine and designed around the Finnish wilderness tradition. Each includes a fireplace, private sauna, and kitchenette.

Sizes range from two-person cabins through to larger options sleeping up to six, suited to families or groups. A century-old log house is also available for guests seeking a more historic setting.
