Ideal for travellers who want depth without intensity, and history without haste, this journey brings clarity and ease to one of Mexico’s most layered regions.

Why Yucatán to Riviera Maya: Cities, Ruins and Caribbean Coast

In detail

  • Days 1-2: Mérida

    Days 1-2: Mérida

Arrive in Mérida, the cultural centre of the Yucatán Peninsula, where Mayan heritage and Spanish colonial history shape daily life. A private transfer takes you to a centrally located boutique hotel, well placed for exploring the city on foot.

Spend your first full day with a private guide exploring Mérida’s historic core. Walk through the main square, visit the Cathedral of San Ildefonso, and follow Paseo de Montejo, lined with former henequen-era mansions that reflect the city’s economic past. The afternoon is unstructured, allowing time to explore cafés, galleries or local markets at your own pace.

  • Day 3: Uxmal

    Day 3: Uxmal

Travel south to Uxmal, one of the most architecturally refined Mayan sites in the region. With a private guide, explore the Pyramid of the Magician, the Quadrangle of the Nuns and surrounding ceremonial buildings, known for their detailed stone mosaics and balanced proportions.

Uxmal offers a quieter, more contained experience than larger sites, making it easier to understand Mayan urban planning and symbolism. Return to Mérida in the late afternoon.

  • Day 4: Chichén Itzá

    Day 4: Chichén Itzá

Depart Mérida and travel east, stopping at Chichén Itzá en route to the Riviera Maya. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was once a major political and religious centre, linking trade routes across Mesoamerica.

Walk the central ceremonial zone with your guide, taking in the Kukulkán Pyramid, the Great Ball Court and the Sacred Cenote. The visit focuses on context rather than spectacle, helping explain how astronomy, mathematics and ritual shaped the city’s design. Continue onward to the coast and check into a beachfront resort set among mangroves and white sand.

  • Days 5-6: Riviera Maya

    Days 5-6: Riviera Maya

These days are intentionally flexible. Spend time enjoying the coast, swimming in warm Caribbean water or relaxing at the resort.

One day is set aside to visit the coastal ruins of Tulum, where Mayan structures sit above the sea on low cliffs. Walk through the former ceremonial centre and take time along the shoreline below before returning to the resort. The rest of your time is free for spa treatments, short excursions or simple rest.
