Discover Kenya in complete privacy with an exclusive journey through Laikipia, the Chyulu Hills, and Lamu, combining private conservancies, volcanic landscapes, and a secluded Swahili island escape.

At a glance...

This itinerary moves through three of Kenya’s least trodden destinations across seven nights, avoiding the well-worn circuit of the Masai Mara and Amboseli entirely in favor of a routing that produces a different quality of experience at every stage.

Laikipia opens the journey on a plateau that stretches from the foothills of Mount Kenya to the wall of the Rift Valley, a landscape of private conservancies and family-owned ranches that holds half of Kenya’s black rhino population, the largest elephant herds outside the national parks, and an activity programme built around horseback safaris and night drives that the national park system does not allow.

The Chyulu Hills provide the middle section, a volcanic mountain range between Amboseli and Tsavo that is one of the youngest on Earth and one of the least visited safari destinations in the country. Lamu closes the journey. An island off Kenya’s northern coast, it has no cars, the architecture reflects seven hundred years of Indian Ocean trade, and the pace that the rest of the itinerary has moved at gives way to something slower entirely.

Do Not Disturb designs the full seven nights around what each area produces at its best and how the journey moves between them.

Why Kenya in Complete Privacy: Laikipia, Chyulu Hills and Lamu

In detail

  • Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi

    Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi

Your journey begins in Nairobi, where a driver meets you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and transfers you to your accommodation in the city. Most international flights from the US connect through a Middle Eastern or European hub, with direct services from New York on Kenya Airways and connections via Amsterdam, London, Dubai, and Doha.

A night in Nairobi before the first flight north allows time to adjust, eat well, and begin the journey at a pace that the bush will demand from the following morning. All activities, restaurant reservations, and transfers within the city can be arranged on request.

  • Days 2-4: Laikipia

    Days 2-4: Laikipia

A scheduled flight from Wilson Airport carries you north to the Laikipia Plateau in approximately 45 minutes. Laikipia stretches from the foothills of Mount Kenya to the rim of the Rift Valley, divided between private wildlife conservancies and family-owned ranches that have converted grazing land to wildlife habitat over the past four decades.

The results are measurable. Laikipia holds half of Kenya’s black rhino population, more than 3,200 elephants, and around 25 percent of the world’s Grevy’s zebra, alongside wild dog, reticulated giraffe, lion, leopard, and cheetah, all within a landscape that sees a fraction of the visitor numbers that reach the Masai Mara. Your base for three nights sits within a private conservancy chosen for its activity programme as much as its wildlife.

Horseback safaris move through elephant herds and past giraffe without triggering the response that an engine produces. Game drives operate morning and evening, with night drives extending the activity after dark. Walking safaris and a rhino tracking programme on foot with a ranger provide the most direct wildlife encounters available anywhere in Kenya.

  • Days 5-6: Chyulu Hills

    Days 5-6: Chyulu Hills

A light aircraft transfer carries you south to the Chyulu Hills, a volcanic mountain range in southeastern Kenya that sits between Amboseli and Tsavo and was formed by eruptions as recent as 240 years ago.

The landscape is unlike anything else in Kenya, with rolling green hills covered in cloud forest, black lava flows cutting across the slopes, and lava tubes that run for kilometers beneath the surface. The Chyulu Hills contain the world’s second-longest lava tube, Leviathan Cave, at 11.5 kilometers. The Chyulu Hills are among Kenya’s least visited national parks, and the two nights here operate at a pace and scale that no busier destination can produce.

Your base sits within a private concession on the western slopes, with access to both the park and the surrounding Maasai land. Walking the volcanic ridgeline with a Maasai guide covers terrain and reveals wildlife that no game drive reaches.

Horseback safaris move through the open woodland on the lower slopes, where elephant bulls, giraffe, zebra, eland, and buffalo move between the hills and the plains below. On a clear day, Kilimanjaro is visible from the ridge, rising above the Amboseli plains to the south. The lava tubes can be explored on foot with a guide, dropping into a geological record of the eruptions that shaped this landscape.

  • Days 7-8: Lamu

    Days 7-8: Lamu

A light aircraft transfer connects to Nairobi, from where a scheduled flight carries you northeast to Manda Airport and a boat transfer brings you to Lamu. Lamu is a 700-year-old Swahili settlement and UNESCO World Heritage Site with no cars, narrow coral-stone streets, and an architecture shaped by seven centuries of Indian Ocean trade between Bantu, Arab, Persian, and Indian cultures.

Your base for two nights sits in Shela Village, a short walk from the Old Town and the start of a twelve-kilometer beach. A private dhow cruise at sunset, a guided walk through the Old Town, and a day trip to the Takwa Ruins on Manda Island bring the journey to a close. On the evening of Day 8, a boat transfer to Manda Airport connects to Nairobi for onward flights.
