An 8-day tailor-made family journey through Norway, from Oslo to the Aurlandsfjord and Bergen. The Flåmsbana railway, fjord rowing and private guides throughout

At a glance...

Oslo to Bergen by way of the Aurlandsfjord. This journey was built for families who want Norway to feel like an experience rather than a tour. It moves at a pace that works for children without sacrificing the things that make the country worth visiting. Two nights in Oslo, three nights at a family-run lodge in the Aurland valley, and two nights in Bergen to finish.

The itinerary is anchored by the Flåmsbana railway, one of the steepest train lines in the world and one of the few journeys that holds the attention of children and adults equally. Around it, the trip builds in hiking to a working mountain farm above the Aurlandsfjord, rowing on the fjord with a picnic lunch, cycling through the Flåm valley with a private guide, and enough time in both cities to explore without rushing.

Norway is one of the few destinations in Europe that works for every age in a group. The landscapes are on a scale that impresses children as much as adults. The activities are physical without being demanding. The food is built around fish, open-fire cooking and produce from the surrounding farms and valleys. The country is safe, straightforward to navigate and designed around being outdoors.

Do Not Disturb designs the trip around your family, the ages of your children and how you want to spend your time, securing the right properties, private guides and experiences at each stage.

Why Norway’s Fjords with Kids: A Luxury Family Adventure

In detail

  • Days 1-2: Oslo

    Days 1-2: Oslo

Oslo is a good city to arrive into with children. It is compact, easy to navigate on foot, and the museum district on the Bygdøy peninsula can fill two days without repeating itself.

The Viking Ship Museum houses three ships that were buried as funeral vessels over a thousand years ago and were excavated from the Norwegian soil in the 19th and early 20th centuries. They are among the best-preserved Viking ships in the world and the scale of them, seen in person, makes an impression that photographs do not prepare you for.

The Fram Museum next door houses the original polar vessel Fram, the ship that carried Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen on their respective expeditions, and tells the story of the Norwegian polar age through the ship itself.

In the city center, Vigeland Sculpture Park covers 80 acres of Frogner Park and holds more than 200 works in granite, bronze and cast iron, all created by Gustav Vigeland as a single commission. The park is free and open at all times.

The Opera House on the Oslofjord waterfront was designed with a roof that slopes down to the water so that you can walk up and over it, which children tend to find more interesting than the building itself.

For families who want to cover more ground, Do Not Disturb arranges a cycling tour of the city following the path of the Akerselva River to the Mathallen indoor food market, where the city’s restaurant scene is concentrated in one building.

  • Days 3-5: Aurland and the Flåmsbana

Days 3-5: Aurland and the Flåmsbana

From Oslo, the Bergen Railway carries you west through the Hardangervidda mountain plateau to Myrdal, where you board the Flåmsbana. The descent covers 20 kilometers and drops nearly 900 meters through ravines, past waterfalls and alongside rock faces that press in close to the track. The train stops at Kjosfossen where the waterfall drops 93 meters directly beside the track. The journey takes 55 minutes.

At the end of the line, Flåm sits at the foot of the Aurlandsfjord. Your base for three nights is 29/2 Aurland, a family-run lodge a short drive up the valley where owners Tone and Bjorn meet guests personally. The property sits in the hills above the fjord with views across the water and into the surrounding mountains.

The activities in the valley are built for families. Do Not Disturb arranges a guided hike up to Hovdungo, a working mountain farm above the valley where the path takes in views across the fjord, mountains and waterfalls on the way up, and where the farm itself is still producing cheese and keeping animals in the traditional way.

A second day can be spent on the fjord itself by rowing boat, exploring the inlets and coves of the Aurlandsfjord with a picnic lunch packed by the lodge. The third option is a cycling day through the Flåm valley with a private guide, following the valley floor from the lodge down to the water below.

  • Days 6-7: Bergen

    Days 6-7: Bergen

A two-and-a-half-hour drive from Aurland, following the fjord road west, brings you into Bergen. The city was founded in 1070 and for several hundred years was the largest in Norway and the main port of the Hanseatic League.

The colored wooden buildings of Bryggen, the old wharf district, have stood in various forms since the 14th century and are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fish market at the harbor runs each morning and is one of the more memorable places to eat in Bergen, particularly for children who have not eaten fresh crab bought off a boat before.

Your private guide covers Bryggen and the Hanseatic Museum before continuing to Troldhaugen, the former home and composing studio of Edvard Grieg on the shore of Nordåsvannet lake south of the city.

The funicular up Mount Fløyen departs from the center of Bergen and takes five minutes to reach the top, where the view takes in the harbor, the surrounding mountains and, on a clear day, the outer islands beyond. There are walking trails at the top and a cafe at the station.

For families wanting more time outdoors, a hike up Mount Ulriken at 643 meters gives a longer day on the mountain with views out to the open sea.

  • Day 8: Departure

    Day 8: Departure

Depending on your flight time, Bergen leaves room for a final morning in the city before your transfer to the airport. Bergen’s covered market at Torget opens early and is at its quietest before the midday crowd arrives. It is a good place to pick up smoked salmon, brown cheese and dried fish to take home, and one of the more honest souvenirs Norway offers.

Do Not Disturb arranges a private transfer to Bergen Airport in time for your departure, with connections through Amsterdam, London or Copenhagen to most major US cities

Add your Do Not Disturb moment

  • A multi-day dog sledding expedition on the Finnmarksvidda plateau in northern Norway covers 25 to 40 kilometres a day through terrain that has no roads and no artificial light. Guests drive their own sled, stay overnight in wilderness cabins and spend several days covering ground that is otherwise inaccessible in winter. The season runs from December through March.

  • Every January the skrei arrive in Lofoten, and they have been doing so since before the Viking Age. A private fishing and cooking experience puts the guest directly in a cycle that has shaped these islands for over a thousand years.

  • Maaemo is Norway's only three Michelin-starred restaurant, serving a tasting menu built entirely on Norwegian ingredients. Chef Esben Holmboe Bang opened it in 2010 on the principle that Norwegian food culture cannot be separated from the landscape that produced it. Bookings sell out within hours of release.

  • Tromsø sits beneath the Auroral Oval in northern Norway, giving it some of the most consistent Northern Lights conditions in the world. A private boat charter departs when conditions are right, moves to the darkest available fjord and stays as long as the display warrants.
