At a glance

Duba Plains Camp stands on a 77,000-hectare private concession in the heart of the Okavango Delta, a landscape of palm-dotted islands, open floodplains, and woodland.

Dereck and Beverly Joubert, the National Geographic filmmakers and conservationists who co-founded Great Plains Conservation, chose this concession as their base for decades of wildlife filmmaking. The lion and buffalo interactions that defined their work in the Delta, documented in the National Geographic film Relentless Enemies, took place on these plains.

The camp was designed by Dereck Joubert to draw on the safari aesthetic of the 1920s, with recycled railway sleepers forming the raised platforms of every suite and the main deck that extends out over the swamp beneath a canopy of ebony trees. Great Plains Conservation is the only operator on the concession, with a maximum of ten guests at any one time, making it one of the most private positions in the Delta. The camp holds Relais and Chateaux membership alongside Zarafa, and a conservation levy from every stay is directed to the Great Plains Foundation’s work across Botswana, Kenya, and Zimbabwe.

    Food and Drink

Dining at Duba operates around the rhythm of the day rather than a fixed schedule. Picnic breakfasts and lunches are served in the field when game drives are active, brought out to guests wherever they are in the concession. Dinners are taken together in the raised dining room under the ebony trees or privately in the suite on request.

An interactive kitchen allows guests to engage with the preparation of meals, and wine tastings are available from a cellar of several hundred hand-selected wines. Guests can arrange to have specific bottles shipped home on departure.

    Activities

Game drives operate morning, afternoon, and evening, with night drives available after dark. The Duba lions are documented to be up to 15 percent larger than lions in other areas of the Delta.

Guided bush walks cover the surrounding concession on foot. Boating and mokoro excursions are available subject to seasonal water levels. The Young Explorers Programme operates for children aged six and over, covering tracking, birding, cooking, and conservation knowledge. Helicopter flights can be arranged at an additional cost, with a champagne stop on a palm island available en route.

Travel inspiration and editorials

Kenya’s most compelling honeymoon itinerary moves between two entirely different worlds: the wildlife-dense plains of the Maasai Mara and the ancient coral-stone quietude of Lamu Island. Together, they form a journey that is both dramatically varied and precisely calibrated for couples seeking depth over spectacle.
