Why Mexico City: History and Art Journey

In detail

  • Days 1-2: Arrival and the Historic Centre

Days 1-2: Arrival and the Historic Centre

Arrive in Mexico City, where a private airport assistant helps you through arrival formalities before a transfer to your centrally located accommodation. The rest of the day is left open to settle in, rest after the flight or take a short walk to get a first sense of the city’s scale and rhythm.

The following day focuses on the historic centre, an area shaped by centuries of political, religious and social change. With a private guide, explore the Zócalo, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace, home to Diego Rivera’s murals depicting Mexico’s history and identity. Walk along Avenida Madero, where historic facades sit alongside busy shops and cafés, before continuing to the National Museum of Anthropology for a broader understanding of the country’s pre-Hispanic cultures.

  • Day 3: Colonia Roma and the City’s Food Scene

Day 3: Colonia Roma and the City’s Food Scene

Today shifts to Colonia Roma, one of Mexico City’s most active residential neighbourhoods. Known for its cafés, markets and small restaurants, it offers a more everyday view of city life.

Join a private food-focused walk through the area, sampling a range of local dishes and drinks while learning about the neighbourhood’s evolution and its role in the city’s contemporary culture. The afternoon is free to explore independently or return to your hotel to unwind.

  • Day 4: Teotihuacan and the Basilica of Guadalupe

Day 4: Teotihuacan and the Basilica of Guadalupe

Leave the city behind for a day to visit Teotihuacan, one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Americas. Walk along the Avenue of the Dead, climb the Pyramid of the Sun and explore the Temple of the Feathered Serpent with a private guide who provides historical and cultural context.

On the return journey, stop at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, an important pilgrimage site and a key part of Mexico’s spiritual life. The contrast between ancient ruins and living religious tradition offers a deeper perspective on the country’s past and present.

  • Day 5: Coyoacán and San Ángel

Day 5: Coyoacán and San Ángel

Spend the day in the southern neighbourhoods of Coyoacán and San Ángel, areas long associated with artists, writers and political thinkers. Visit the former home of Frida Kahlo, gaining insight into her work and personal life, before continuing to the Leon Trotsky House, preserved as a record of his time in exile.

The day concludes at Diego Rivera’s Casa Estudio, where architecture and creative process come together. Return to the city centre in the late afternoon with time for a quiet evening or a final meal in one of the nearby neighbourhoods.

  • Day 6: Departure

    Day 6: Departure
