At a Glance

Sand Rivers sits on a broad curve of the mile-wide Rufiji River in the northern reaches of Nyerere National Park, one of the largest protected wilderness areas in the world.

The lodge feels almost moored to the riverbank, with one side left entirely open to the water so that the current, the wildlife, and the light all move through it freely. Every cottage faces the Rufiji; the sounds of hippos and the movement of birds across the sandbanks are a constant presence, day and night.

The lodge holds 8 cottages across two categories: 5 Riverside Rooms and 3 Hillside Suites. The main lounge, dining area, and bar sit under a sweeping thatched roof with panoramic river views, and a swimming pool overlooking the water is available for guests throughout the day.

Its operators lead the field of walking safaris in this part of Tanzania. They support the TAWIRI elephant research programme and the Selous Rhino Trust, both focused on protecting species within Nyerere that have been seriously affected by poaching in recent decades.

  • Food & Drink

    Food & Drink

Meals are served in the open-sided dining area overlooking the river, with breakfast and lunch built around the day’s activity schedule.

Afternoon tea is provided following the day’s excursions, and dinner runs to three satisfying courses.

Private dining is available at locations around camp for guests who want something more secluded.

Complimentary drinks available throughout the day and evening.

  • Activities & Experiences

    Activities & Experiences

Sand Rivers offers one of the most varied activity programmes on the southern Tanzania circuit, built around the Rufiji and the diverse habitats of Nyerere.

Game drives head out in open 4x4s in the early morning and late afternoon, ranging across open glades, woodland, and riverine forest.

Walking safaris, a specialty here since the lodge’s earliest days, give guests the chance to move quietly through the bush at ground level, tracking game on foot and reading the landscape in a way no vehicle allows.

On the water, boat trips weave past hippo pods and sandbanks lined with great white pelicans and African skimmers before drifting back to camp with the river doing the work.

Barefoot tiger-fishing in the shallows is another thrilling excursion, while the Tagalala hot springs make for a more wellness-focused activity.

For those who want to go further, fly-camping trips take a small group overnight into the wilderness with a private guide and chef, sleeping in the open under a sky undiluted by artificial light.

  • Good to Know

    Good to Know

The dry season from June to October draws wildlife to the Rufiji in concentrated numbers, making for strong predator sightings as herbivores gather around permanent water.

From November, the rains bring newborn animals of all kinds alongside migratory bird species arriving in vivid breeding plumage, and the rising river makes for exceptional boating.

As for sustainability and charitable endeavors, the lodge supports the Selous Rhino Trust and the TAWIRI elephant research programme, both working to protect species within Nyerere that have been seriously affected by poaching. Proceeds from their shop also go directly to the lodge’s chosen charitable causes.

Room Types

Open-Fronted Cottages

The 5 riverside rooms are built from timber, stone, and thatch and elevated above the ground on decking, each one entirely open-fronted to the river.

Complete with a king-size bed, seating area, and an en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower, these rooms have everything you need after a day of exploring what Africa has to offer.

Hippos are almost always visible in the water below, and vervet monkeys can be seen moving through the trees above.
