At a glance

Rhino River Lodge sits on the banks of the Msunduze River in the 57,000-acre Manyoni Private Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The lodge is family-owned and built around the reserve’s original purpose, a black rhino conservation programme that continues today.

Accommodation covers four en-suite luxury rooms, two Family Chalets, and two private safari houses, the Cottage and the Homestead, each suited to different group sizes and budgets. The two safari houses each add a private plunge pool above the river.

Twice-daily game drives in open 4x4s cover the full Big Five plus cheetah and wild dog, with the reserve’s 415 recorded bird species making for strong birding straight from camp. Manyoni means “place of the birds” in Zulu, and the reserve grew from a rhino conservation effort that the lodge continues to support directly.

In detail

  • Food and Drink

    Food and Drink

All meals are included. The main lodge keeps its lounge, bar, and dining room on a raised deck above the Msunduze River, shaded by fig and fever trees, with kudu often grazing the lawn at lunch.

Cooking is hearty, traditional South African fare, paired with local wines. After the afternoon drive, dinner moves to the boma, served around a log fire beneath the stars.

  • Wellness

    Wellness

Wellness here is relaxed and low-key. A large swimming pool, set apart from the dining areas under a thatched gazebo, is the main place to cool off in the midday heat.

The two private safari houses, the Cottage and the Homestead, each add their own plunge pool above the riverbed. Spa treatments can be arranged on request, and a small fitness room covers anyone keeping active.

  • Activities

    Activities

Game viewing leads the day, with morning and afternoon drives in open 4x4s across the 57,000-acre Manyoni Private Game Reserve, tracking lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, rhino, cheetah, and wild dog.

Guided bush walks and night drives can be added. Manyoni means “place of the birds,” and its 415 recorded species make for strong birding straight from camp. The reserve grew from a black rhino conservation programme, and that work continues at the lodge today.

The Okavango Delta and the Kruger region represent two distinct philosophies of safari travel. Choosing between them is less a matter of preference than of understanding what each place actually offers.

From the sweeping plains of the Serengeti to the energy of the Masai Mara and the intimacy of private conservancies, not all safaris feel the same. Understanding how each reserve manages access and wildlife encounters is the key to choosing an experience that feels expansive, unhurried, and deeply immersive.

The reassuring reality is that some of Southern Africa’s most respected safari destinations are located in malaria-free regions, allowing travelers to enjoy exceptional wildlife experiences without taking preventative medication.
