Napa Valley and Sonoma Wine Tour

Napa Valley and Sonoma Wine Tour

6 days

|

From £3,565 pp

Two of California’s great wine valleys, done properly. Napa for the grand estates and serious cellars, Sonoma for the smaller producers and the quieter pace.

At a glance...

Napa is grand, structured, and unambiguously serious about its wines. Sonoma is looser, more pastoral, and producing bottles that are attracting serious attention from collectors worldwide. Six days across both valleys is one of the great wine travel experiences anywhere on earth.

This itinerary gives each valley the time it deserves. Three nights in Napa, based at Meadowood or Auberge du Soleil, working through the valley at a pace that allows the wineries to be experiences rather than stops on a list. Then west over the Mayacamas Mountains into Sonoma for three nights, where the Russian River Valley and the Sonoma Coast add a cooler, more contemplative dimension to the week.

Why Napa Valley and Sonoma Wine Tour

In detail

  • Day 1: Arrival in Napa

    Day 1: Arrival in Napa

Your driver meets you at San Francisco International Airport, around an hour’s drive north to the valley. Check in to Meadowood Napa Valley in St. Helena, a private resort set among 250 acres of woodland and vineyards that has been the defining address in the valley for decades. The afternoon is yours. Dinner at the property that evening.

  • Day 2: The Northern Valley

    Day 2: The Northern Valley

A private guide takes you north to Calistoga for the morning. Pride Mountain Vineyards sits on the Napa-Sonoma county line at 2,100 feet and produces Cabernet Sauvignon of genuine distinction in small quantities.

A tasting in the cave with the winemaker, then lunch in Calistoga at a restaurant your guide has selected. The afternoon at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars in the southern Stags Leap District, the producer whose 1973 Cabernet defeated French wines at the Paris Tasting and changed how the world thought about California wine.

  • Day 3: Rutherford and St. Helena

Day 3: Rutherford and St. Helena

The heart of the valley. A morning at Opus One, the joint venture between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild that remains one of Napa’s most architecturally serious estates, by appointment only.

Lunch in Yountville, the small town that contains more Michelin stars per capita than almost anywhere on earth. The afternoon at Far Niente in Oakville, where the 1885 stone winery sits above cave cellars holding some of the valley’s finest aged Chardonnay and Cabernet.

  • Day 4: Transfer to Sonoma

    Day 4: Transfer to Sonoma

A private car west over the Mayacamas Mountains, around 45 minutes, into a valley that immediately feels different. The landscape opens, the pace drops, and the wines change character.

Check in to Montage Healdsburg in the Dry Creek Valley, a hillside resort among 258 acres of vines with views across the valley floor. The afternoon is unscheduled. Dinner at the resort.

  • Day 5: Russian River Valley and Pinot Noir

Day 5: Russian River Valley and Pinot Noir

The Russian River Valley produces some of California’s finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, shaped by the Pacific fog that rolls in through the Petaluma Gap each morning.

A private guide takes you to Williams Selyem, one of the producers that established the valley’s reputation, where allocation-only wines are poured by appointment. Lunch in Healdsburg, Sonoma’s most refined small town. The afternoon at Gary Farrell Vineyards on the Westside Road, with views over the Russian River from the tasting room deck.

  • Day 6: Departure

    Day 6: Departure

A slow morning in Healdsburg before your driver takes you back to San Francisco International Airport, around 75 minutes depending on routing. Timed to your departure.
