Classic Southwest itinerary through Scottsdale, Sedona, Amangiri, Moab, Zion, and Las Vegas. Explore desert landscapes, luxury hotels, and iconic US scenery.

At a glance...

The American Southwest is one of the great road trip landscapes in the world, and this twelve-night itinerary covers the route that makes the strongest case for it. Scottsdale and Sedona in Arizona, Amangiri and Moab in Utah, Zion National Park and Las Vegas at the close.

The hotels are chosen for position and quality throughout, from the Four Seasons at Troon North to Amangiri in the Utah desert, and the pace is set to allow each place the time it deserves. This is the Southwest done properly, with private guides, backcountry access and enough space in the schedule to appreciate the vast landscapes surrounding you.

Why Classic Southwest: Scottsdale, Sedona and Las Vegas

In detail

  • Days 1 and 2: Scottsdale

    Days 1 and 2: Scottsdale

Your rental car is waiting at Phoenix Airport. The drive north to the Four Seasons Scottsdale at Troon North takes under an hour, the saguaro cacti lining the approach road making it clear you have arrived somewhere unique.

One night here to acclimatize before the journey properly begins. The hotel sits against Pinnacle Peak in the Sonoran Desert and the pool and spa are worth the evening.

  • Days 3 and 4: Sedona

    Days 3 and 4: Sedona

The drive north to Sedona takes around two hours and the landscape shifts dramatically along the way. Check in to the Enchantment Resort, built into the red rock formations of Boynton Canyon and one of the more striking hotel settings in the American Southwest.

The first afternoon is a two-hour open-top jeep exploration of Sedona’s backcountry with a private guide, covering the geology and natural history of the sandstone buttes and canyon trails that most visitors only see from the road. The second day is a full guided tour through the Red Rock Scenic Byway, the Chapel of the Holy Cross, and the vortex sites at Cathedral Rock and Bell Rock.

  • Days 5 and 6: Amangiri

    Days 5 and 6: Amangiri

An early departure from Sedona with stops along the way worth building into the drive. Horseshoe Bend above the Colourado River, the volcanic remnants of Sunset Crater, and the dinosaur tracks near Tuba City all justify the time. The destination is Amangiri in Canyon Point, Utah, a modernist desert retreat that sits as naturally in its surroundings as any building in the country.

  • Days 7 to 9: Moab

    Days 7 to 9: Moab

A five-hour drive to Moab through sweeping desert canyon country, with the Hoodoo Moab as the base for three nights. The town sits between Arches and Canyonlands National Parks and the itinerary makes full use of both.

Day one on the Colourado River, on a motorized raft through the upper section before the canyon narrows and the water picks up through Cataract Canyon. Day two with a private guide across the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands, down the Shafer Trail switchbacks to the river corridor, and into Arches for the backcountry trails past Tower Arch and the Eye of the Whale. The fossilized dinosaur tracks on the way out are an unexpected final detail.

  • Days 10 and 11: Zion National Park

Days 10 and 11: Zion National Park

The drive from Moab to Springdale via Highway 12 is one of the great road trip routes in the United States. Capitol Reef National Park and Bryce Canyon are both worth stopping for along the way, the hoodoos at Bryce in particular earning more time than most itineraries allow.

Arrive at the Cliffrose Lodge on the banks of the Virgin River in the early afternoon. The following day is a private guided exploration of Zion tailored to conditions and interest. The Narrows, wading through the water-sculpted slot canyon of Wall Street, is the standout experience when water levels allow. A gourmet picnic lunch on the trail and time in a genuine Wild West ghost town round out the day.

  • Days 12 and 13: Las Vegas

Days 12 and 13: Las Vegas

The drive west from Zion takes around two and a half hours. Check in to the Wynn, the most considered address on the Strip, where the restaurants, entertainment and general quality of the operation set it apart from the competition.

A day at leisure in Las Vegas, or a helicopter excursion to the Grand Canyon for a different perspective on the landscape covered over the past two weeks. Departure from Harry Reid International on the final morning.
